im doing the friendship quest and when i go to tell maku "You owe me at least 3 lunches!" it dosent work... im not sure why

Did you pass him the other messages (lines) without any problem?

Make sure that there is no hidden whitespace at the beginning or end of the message line.
Yeah - when people copy out of the wiki (which is what any sane person would do) this is often a problem.
Copy+paste out of the wiki and into notepad, manually trim any leading and trailing whitespace (including new line at end), and copy+paste from there into RO.
