For some reason everytime i switch characters or log off and log back on my screen doesnt save how i put it. I have to re-open hotkeys, item box, and info box... is there a way to save this for every character? Also for some reason my login screen always saves my old account, even when i type in the new account name and click save account name.

Move RO folder outside of program files.

If that fails, check that all users have write permission to the RO folder.

I've done all these things and I'm still having the same problem:
  • Moved my Gravity folder from Program Files to C: (no change)
  • Moved my Gravity folder to My Documents (no change)
  • Moved the two folders inside Gravity (Ragnarok Online and Ragnarok Online Renewal) outside of the Gravity folder (no change)
  • Merged the two folders replacing all files (Merged Ragnarok Online into Ragnarok Online Renewal) (no change)

(the plain RO folder seems to be where everything I customize shows up in game (skins, guild emblems) even though I play renewal (Chaos))

  • I double and triple checked that I have permission to write to the RO folder
I can't save any emotes, it doesn't save the server I select to play on or the character I picked last or when I move any windows in the game. I've been tolerating it thus far, but it's annoying to have to move everything around every time I play.

Have you tried running the client with administrative privileges? To do so:

  • Right-click the appropriate shortcut.
  • Choose "run as administrator".
  • Answer the UAC dialogue window that is opened affirmatively.

Just so you know, the client is contained within a a single folder. You have two client folders because, at some point in the past, you didn't uninstall the client before installing a new version of it.

Thanks a bunch!

The 'run as admin' thing worked... having to right click is a small price to pay to get to keep my settings, I suppose! I don't know why it won't automatically do that since my user account is an admin account, but whatever... at least it works now!

I figured as much about the single folder bit. I had RO on a year and a half ago, and as far as I thought, I'd deleted it all... I'll fix that up at a later date :D

It should not make a difference whether you run as admin if it's not installed in program files.

I am completely baffled, apparently I don't understand how UAC works and shouldn't be giving people advice on these forums./

It's necessary to run both the Renewal and Classic clients with administrative privileges for two reasons:

  • The clients save the majority of their settings to a subkey of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE root key in the registry, which requires administrative privileges.
  • Gravity somehow managed to break both of the clients' compatibility with UAC Virtualisation last year. -_-

As far as I know, the location of an application's files has no bearing on whether it can successfully write to the registry. :)

But it should be getting virutalized if it's not run as admin, or not virtualized if it is....

As I said, Gravity broke something. I think they tried to implement UAC support but failed, leaving it only partially implemented.

I'm not sure if it's placebo or not but I notice any program runs better (more smoothly/etc) whenever I use Run as Administrator. Administrator account doesn't mean anything, you'd still need to run something as an administrator to get the benefits (like the aforementioned UAC issues with RO).

Oh computers! y u so silly. lol xD

For anyone who is having this problem, and who likes to keep RO handy in the taskbar, do the following:

To always run it as an administrator without having to right-click (which you can't do if the shortcut is in the taskbar), put the shortcut to RO on your destop, and right click it and select 'Properties'.

Under the 'Shortcut' tab, click the 'Advanced' button at the bottom. Check off the box next to 'Run as Administrator'. Apply the changes and close the box.

You're now free to drag the shortcut back into your task bar and your problem is solved! A popup window may still appear asking if you want to allow it to make changes, but at least you won't have to remember to right click the RO shortcut to start it all the time. :)
