7 Samurai.
Why? Because I love the storyline. Based on a move from 1954 with the same name.

For movies, Lupin the 3rd: Castle of Cagliostro is probably my favorite. It's Hayao Miyazaki's first feature film, creating the perfect blend of humor, action and atmosphere. Even if you're not familiar with the characters in Lupin III, the movie does a very good job of introducing them with the trademark Miyazaki touch.
For TV series, I still have a lot of affection for Cowboy Bebop. They created an interesting world that hadn't really been done before and told some very varied and interesting stories.

Attack on Titan - A lot of unexpected twists and turns. A lot of real life emotions in the face of fear. (it has murder and people killing, so be careful.)
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Closely follows the manga and is an exciting action series.
Great Teacher Onizuka - This was mentioned earlier, but it's that good.
Sword Art Online - One of the surprisingly few animes based on MMORPGs. The series is short (about 25 episodes in total) but the story gets right to the point and the overall emotion behind it I feel is right on.
