Mercenary cannot identify monsters like homuns can.
As a result, the homun doesn't have a fool-proof way to tell apart monsters it should attack, from herb plants that it should ignore.
My resolution to this was for it to "autodetect plants" by assuming anything that the game hasn't seen move or attack is an herb plant and should be ignored. This is a good heuristic everywhere except in ant hell.
For situations where the default behavior is bad, there are two approaches:
* AutoDetectPlants=0 (false) will completely disable this behavior
* You can set tactics for things that the AI hasn't seen move or attack using the Default Plant tactic (or whatever I called it - might be "autodetected plant" or something like that). This is more flexible, as it gives you a way to set different priority for ants (since they're moving and use default tactic) and eggs (since they will use plant tactic).
You'd never realize how many maps have so many herb plants on them, until you try to use a mercenary that treats them like valid targets and stands there slowly killing them at 1dmg per hit and wasting skill SP on them - it was AWFUL on most maps before I did the plant detect. You'll see what I mean if you leave AutoDetectPlants=0 on other maps :-P

It works for me - just tested.
Did you set the correct option? It's AutoDetectPlant (case sensitive). If using the config tool, it's under basic options on the mercenary tab.
Also, you must relog after saving any setting changes for them to take effect.
