I had two questions generally about elements.

#1-Are normal attacks from monsters generally neutral, elemental, or a mix of both? Let's take Explosion for example. It's a fire 3 monster. I'm sure this has more to do to it's element in relation to attacks against it, but what about when it attacks?

#2-Elemental armor/cards that change the user to a certain element: When getting attacked by that element, the elemental damage is nullified, correct? And what about skills like Grand Cross? Would an Angeling card nullify the damage done to you when you cast it?

#1 afaik, it's generally neutral unless they got skills such as water attack or something

#2 iirc, elemental-changing cards for armor like swordfish and bathory will turn you into level 1 of the element (eg water 1 or shadow 1), thus, having waterball lv10 hit you although you wear swordfish-carded armor will still hurt (learned it the hard way)

can't answer the GC-related and angeling-related question

1.Normal attacks from monsters have no element and as such are unaffected by ghostring card. They are, however, treated as neutral by neutral resistance effects(like raydric card). The normal attacks can be changed to another element via sorcerer insignias.

Monster skills are either neutral or forced to another element(Like Fire Attack is forced to fire).Any skill not forced to an element is neutral and can be changed to another element via Sorcerer insignias.

A monster's element does not affect it's attacking element.

2.It's not always nullified. It'll change you to level 1 of that element. You can use this table to compare the damage received from various elements.

Angeling would nullify the damage received from Grand Cross.

Of course, grand cross also takes a % of your HP away, which angeling won't stop.

I see. So cards and armors that change a character's element in PvM are almost not needed except when MVPing or changing a monster's element? Other than that, it would seem that elemental resist cards would be better for WoE, PvP and such. Am I correct? For someone like me (who doesn't WoE or any type of PvP), it's better to get neutral resist cards and great gear, then start piecing together some elemental resistant gears later?

But as for GC, I thought that Angeling would nullify the damage taken when casting GC. Is there anything to at least reduce the damage? I have a Paladin and when he was a crusader,  the damage taken when casting it was too great when I was getting mobbed. I usually ended up being the one hurting myself the most. x.x I don't have enough skill points yet for Gloria Domini, so I was going to try to get an Angeling card and HC/GC everything until I could get GD, but if Angeling card doesn't work this way, my money is better spent on other gears.

Are HC/GC builds even considered "good" for Royal Guards? I was looking at some of the skills for RGs, but it's going to be a while before I get there...

It's not really needed at low levels but as you get higher and monster skills start to hurt much more,it's useful to have some elements.Shadow, for instance,is very useful as it gives immunity(reduces damage to 1) from shadow and undead attacks.

Yes,get neutral resist first.

If you ever wish to WoE make sure you have an unfrozen fire armour. For MvPing you'll need to have unfrozen fire, water and wind element armours.

Angeling will nullify the part of GC that is holy.I'm unaware of the % of hp consumed by the skill that Jaye is talking about.

About RGs you'll be using Overbrand for levelling so until you get that just mob/tank in Turn In parties. For more info on RGs,consult the swordsman class forums.

I already have a +4 Unfrozen Lucius's Fierce Armor of Volcano and a +4 Crescent Scythe as well as a few other pieces like Vali's Manteau that was listed on the wiki pages. Those, plus my wife's headgear fetish are the reasons why I'm having a hell of a time trying to save up for cards and different gear. lol I just hope the wiki isn't that outdated. x.x

But the reason I made this topic was because when my Paladin was still a Crusader, I took that armor to Nogg Road. I was expecting the monsters like Kaho to not do much damage, but imagine my surprise when I took more damage than I normally did with my Eden armor. Ugh!

Oh well, thanks for all the info everyone. It was a great help!

I think grand cross may have changed with renewal. In pre-renewal it took 20% of your HP with every cast, in addition to damaging you for 1/3 of whatever you dealt to the monsters. Holy armor just took off the 1/3 damage, you still lost the 20% HP.

The renewal entry for grand cross doesn't mention the 20%, so it may have been buffed with renewal.

Classic (pre-renewal): http://irowiki.org/classic/Grand_Cross

Renewal: http://irowiki.org/wiki/Grand_Cross

Grand Cross is sort of useless in renewal so I've never used it since renewal.
