iINT. Introduction
Hey peeps!
After getting frustrated with the lack of documentation regarding Renewal skin creation, I decided to take a shot at creating one myself! Sadly, being bogged down with real life commitments means really slow progress with the whole thing. But rest assured, I'll make sure to keep everyone updated as much as I can when I get the chance. When everything is finalized, template files will be released for everyone to use. This thread will act as a reference guide for that package.
Hopefully, this will encourage more people to put their interface-making skills to the test and produce new and creative skins for the community to use and enjoy.
PROGRESS REPORT: Folder structure and most files are done. More testing needs to be done to double-check everything.
iiCSK. Custom Skins
Ragnarok allows players to change the look of the game's user interface (UI) by going to the Video Configuration menu and choosing the particular skin they want to use in the Skin dropdown menu. When the Renewal update hit the servers, some image files have been changed to accommodate the UI overhaul that took place. That's why some old custom skins uploaded on the web look incomplete when used on Renewal servers.
Some important points to remember:
- Custom skins are stored in the skins folder located on your Ragnarok game folder.
- The game uses .BMP images for all of it's UI elements.
- Images used by the game vary from using 8-bit and 24-bit channels. It's been observed that most UI elements (eg. windows, boxes) use 8-bit while pictures (NPC portraits, item images) use 24-bit.
- The values RGB (255, 0, 255) are used to indicate transparency on the image.
Keep these in mind, and you're good to go!
iiiRST. Restrictions
Of course, there's a limit to how many elements you can modify for your own tastes. The following is a list that enumerate what UI elements you can't change:
- The log-in and character select screen at the start of the game
- Character skill icons
- Item sprites and images
- Map, mini-map, and mini-map help icons (Kafra, town guides, shops, etc.)
- Cute Pet portraits found in the Pet window
- The screensaver-like sequence that comes up when you start a recruitment ad using the Booking system
This list is subject to updates, since I still need to do confirm whether there are any methods to change these as well as add more unmodifiable elements.
