Oi I just noticed this
Melee AP is on Arms + Weapon

While the other damage styles like

Crit, Def Pierce, Magic Pierce and Skill power, only have 1 gem option. IS this intentional, it gives the favor to Melee classes over casters or character built for other purposes aside from AFK melee'ing things to death.

The caster counterpart to Melee Power would be Skill Power, and Skill Power can be placed in Head and Weapon.

It's up to debate and opinion their "weight" per class and build.

 

Skill Power is already multiplying your attack power, while the melee attack power is just on top of normal attack power.

Enhance damage gems triumph both skill power and melee power gems as they are also 4.5% but (enchance damage) effects both skills and melee.

So why are some stats restricted that aren't as potent while the stronger ones are given to multiple gems, in your opinion Phish. Same question to you Leonis.

I wonder the same thing, I feel like the gem stat values (and placements) were a little rushed. I started writing a post up about it the other day (I wanted to make it a discussion to see what other people think). I'll finish writing something up about it tomorrow.
