what is the monster? Furious Champion monsters are bright red and seem sorta transparent... they are natural spawns on maps... they are a bit harder to kill but have a greater job exp reward for killing them

Each map has some champion versions of the most common monster on the map. These give much more exp (particularly job), but are more powerful, and harder to kill. The Furious variety of these has augmented attack, and looks bright red and kinda glowing. (there are a bunch of types of champion monsters, though I don't think there are any monsters with more than one type of champion version. Some have high flee, some have higher attack, some have higher def, etc)
Or it could have been a dead branch summon someone left behind.

If the monster appears translucent it would be a Somatology Laboratory Monster. Most Likely a Somatology Laboratory 3 Monster since they have the ability to enter Fury, which gives them a Static Red Aura. Players usually grief new player maps with Dead Branches in hopes that it will slow down bots, when in all actuality it just ends up hurting new players.
Does this happen to ring a bell?

I don't think I've EVER seen someone go out and use DB's to hurt new players. They do it to hurt bots and refuse to recognize that it hurts new players (or that it doesn't hurt bots, because they have the "reflexes" to teleport away, while real players don't.)

i doubt anyone would go around announcing that this is their intention, but from posts/threads on other parts of the forums, this has been documented. you put too much faith in your fellow man.
