Introduction to War of Emperium siege weapons

Initially I wanted to get newer players acquainted to siege weapons in war of emperium via guide, but then changed to a video of the mechanics that would provide instant feedback.

I created this to help introduce the siege weapons to my newer guildies, especially those with language barriers.

I've now extended this video to the community. Enjoy!

Special thanks goes to SageLeaf for being patient with me on the ITS and Njoror for being accommodating.

The video is really good, but there are a few things missing: F.e.the complex controls, the min-max range, the impact delay and the firing frequency of the Catapult. But also the Mortars and their different debuffs aren't shown enough..

Was this made with a 1-man-guild WoE battle on the ITS?

Pretty sure this gives people a good enough idea of the basic functions of seige for them to go out and ugh idk..... have some self - reliance and learn the complexities of seige themselves

Yeah, I know that it's an

Introduction to Siege Weapons

It just felt a bit odd to me that you took the time to show how you aim with a cannon, etc. but didn't show how to do this with a catapult.... and the latter is the unique one. Another common mistake I've seen is that players forget that it might take multiple "build" actions to complete a siege weapon.

So as I said. It's a good vid, but if you plan to expand it, these arethe points I would add.

But - as usual - if I write more than just...

Cool. :no1:

As I said, I like the video as well and I wish the VCRs would create more of them. If I would be a VCR and would have access to an empty WoE, I'd love to help them. But I'm disappointed that I couldn't mention things that I am missing (or that could further improve the vid) without facing a font-24 reply or being accused as a troll.

Its never too late to apply, applications end on October 22, 2014.  VCR applications at the moment is scarce, more applicants are always welcomed.

Intially I was going to do a comprehensive video on the siege weapons, but in the end I believe an introduction suffice.

1.)  I doubt everyone would want to watch ever siege weapon being built from start to finish.

  • Majority just want to see the mechanics of a siege weapon.  I excluded the No heal and Silence debuff from mortar because it didn't tie into my short clip (I wanted to make the video flow).

2.)  Every guild has different guild skill levels for Strengthen supply, Secure the supply, Invincible spirit.

  • I don't have access to multiple guilds with varying guild skill levels to verify if it affects the build speed. (One of the skill affects the amount of siege weapon recovery, so does that affect build speed?)

3.)  Post production on Adobe Premiere Pro CC and recording is very extensive.

  • It took us three days of recording [Three separate occasions], and it took me several hours to edit and render the video [I'm new to Adobe Premiere Pro CC].

4.)  My internet speed is slow.  I cannot justify uploading a file for several days long.  (3min 29sec file = 1.04 GB)

  • I upload my files in native resolution and raw format [In case I need to extract that video for later use].  It took me overnight to upload that 1.04GB file.

5.)  ITS [Internal Testing Server] has minimal lag compared to the Live Server.  There is no way for me to recreate the FPS drop on ITS that is now plaguing the Live server during WoE.

6.)  Controls for siege weapons are pretty self explanatory, min/max range and radius information are already linked to each siege weapon (Blue ring shows your radius/distance for most offensive siege weapons), CD [Cooldown] and Fire frequency for each siege weapon can be extrapolated by the usage of them during WoE.

  • Information helps, i.e. I could say that catapult has a range from 50m-100m and that is power guage/meter equates to: ~0/1% [50m]  | 50% [75m]  | 100% [100m].  Unfortunately there is no accurate method to measure the distance from Point A to Point B [During Live server WoE] when firing the catapult.  Which also brings up the issue that I have stated prior; FPS drops on Live server will make the catapult movement sluggish and firing it will be in less than pristine condition.  In short, we have to compensate for FPS drop on Live server.
  • Fire frequency of siege weapon will always fluctuate on the Live server for each player.  If I say this weapon has a fire frequency of x, and it is off by ~1-2secs, that is substaintial deviation from its face value.
  • Which brings up another point, does varying vigor/class affect the CD of each siege weapon?  (I have neither all classes and varying equipment on ITS to test that hypothesis.)

Originally I made this video to get my newer guildies acquainted to siege weapons prior to their first WoE.  I decided to make it public to help non-english speakers be familiar with siege weapons, and to help promote more guilds to participate in WoE.  Eventually I will make a comprehensive guide (PDF) on siege weapons or video, but I fear that most people will just "glaze" over it.  Majority just want go into WoE to PvP and destroy things, so for now I believe the basics pertaining to siege weapons suffice.

If you like to help me on the ITS, be sure to apply before the deadline: October 22, 2014.  More VCR [Volunteer Class Representatives] applicants are always appreciated.  Being unbiased and scrutinizing are some of the qualities needed in a VCR, so constantly submitting opinions is paradigm in helping getting things fixed and organized.  Become a VCR.  If someone has the power to do something, why not put it to good use?

I'll see you soon on the ITS.  -Pr3

Like, War of Emperium is a WAR. If Nobody did a video explaining about Siege weapons it's because Siege weapons were/are part of the strategy, as it used to be with BoA, BoS and BoP back in WoE 1.0v. Explaining in detail how to WoE with Siege it's double edge for our Guild too.

Common sense.

Why are you constantly pretending you'd do any better?

Where or when did I pretend that I can do this better? In fact, I neither own nor have I ever used a pro-version video editing tool.

All I did was to point out that I made a lot of mistakes and that I'd like to see them covered to help others to avoid them.

I am not that interested in WoE in general and when I first entered WoE, the siege weapons were underwhelming and uninteresting. The zeny cost also made me hesistant to use them. That's why it took quite a long time until I found out that buying a single "item" of a Catapult, etc. and using it isn't enough. Eventually, I found out that I had to select the given siege weapon and have to use supplies to finish them.

But that's wasn't the only pitfall. In the first few WoEs, I also thought that the siege weapons would fire automatically when an opponent gets nearby... that's why I kept my distance from them as well. On my first attempt to use a Catapult, I didn't figure out that the arrows were actually buttons to shift/turn it (I rarely use a mouse and the normal "shift left/right" keys weren't working) and didn't realize that you can hold the key down in order to "charge it up" to increase the range. And due to the long impact delay and the masses of X-marks on the ground. it wasn't easy to figure out where I had hit.

That's why I wrote that I would have preferred more a "click this to do that" kind of tutorial, but I never said that I could do it better.

B-but you aren't applying for VCR, and you aren't going to make any videos.

Yes, that's true.

I'm a programmer and interested in game mechanics in general. I'm a gamemaster of several different RPGs, created own sub-sets and produced few mods for games (f.e. Oblivion, Torchlight, NWN, etc.) and some of my card creations for Magic the Gathering eventually saw play.

(Gravity should check the latter out to see how well-defined elements could be)

But being interested in an overall balance rather turned out as a one-way ticket. Many replies, many haters.

I really thought that VCRs would be more like forum managers (what isn't something I would be good at) and that's why I haven't applied back then.

It turned out that the VCR system was - sorry for the harsh words - a complete waste of time. I can only play on weekends and aren't online 24/7 like SageLeaf. I am also neither a guild leader like pr3 or sarasah, nor a good tester. I doubt that the other VCRs would enjoy my company, but rather enjoy if 2/3 are from the same guild. And lately, I am even accused for using math to underline my statements and the slightest comment enrages this "friendly" community.

So no, I won't apply. I rather do the only logical step and leave.

The video was named " Introduction to Siege Weapons " not tutorial or a step by step guide. Initially it was supposed to be a video for the guild but Pr3 was gracious enough to share it to the community.

Off topic:
I do kinda agree with you that the VCR system is a joke really. I dont point out the VCRs but the system itself. It was suppose to be a system of collecting info and feedback from other players and discussing it with each other to figure out whats the best we can do to balance all the classes. Being tester on the ITS was a perk but still voluntary work.

Feedbacks and discussions were made but none of them got looked at. If they were, where is it then? Were coming on to the 3rd cycle of the VCR system and none of the class balancing was done except for the ideas Gravity had in mind. Like Priest DOTs (ooooh yeah), assassin penetration ( oh nice! ) etc.

For me the system itself was just a show.

On topic:

As Vau said if we actually showed every detail of what every siege weapon can do, it can be like a double edge sword for us, its strategy too. Also we also want the new guilds to learn themselves on how to properly use and utilize them like what we have done.

And of course the sieges would involve zenny, like think about it: In a war do you get your supplies, ammo, weapons for free? Nope! You still need money and resources.

It is up to you how you will interpret my post or if you wanna call me out like everyone else. Im not hating on you but im just putting my 2 cents on your 2 cents.
If you know what i mean. :U

I would suggest this post stay on topic before any needless topic locks occur, its cool everyone wants to post their opinion but keep it simple I think Pr3's reply was enough, the extra VCR rage is uneeded in this convo.
