usually the stats that help you resist a status effect are the ones that also effect duration of the effect

But only "usually". And with renewal status changes it's just all crazy and random. =p

While most status changes have a default duration, any skill can override that. So you will need to check the skill for the base duration.

i know some status affect the success rate, but does any status affects the duration?

As mentioned above, for pre-renewal status changes usually the same main stat also decreases duration.

There are many exceptions though and sometimes duration is even increased by your stats.

It's all very complicated, if you ask me about a certain skill / status change, I might be be able to tell you more about it. But I'm only really familiar with pre-renewal status changes.

if you're playing on renewal most chars will have at least 100 total vit, and maybe 100 agi/100 int as well.  that should eliminate most status ailments that can affect you.

certain gear sets (outside of carding specifically to grant immunity of course) can also grant you immunity to certain ailments.  For example, I believe getting 100 MDEF on your character grants you freeze/stone curse immunity even if you are not wearing an unfrozen/evil druid armor.  The gear to achieve this feat isn't cheap though and it may not be possible on all classes.
