Hi Players and Requiem staff. Long time player (s1), lurker and rare poster (you can see from my post count that I’m not chatty, usually). Anyways, there were some points I wanted to bring forward for the “good” of Requiem’s future or the lack of it at the moment. Many have talked about skill change, bug fix, etc. So I’m not going to go with the usually “fix it” talk. I actually want to brings ideas on how we could start doing additional things to make sure that the Requiem that we know doesn’t die in the next year.

Googledocs

The community here seems to be pretty slim and passionate about this game. I can easily recognize poster even after a year+ of absence. What I’m wondering, is this: why is there no Googledocs open for us? Why make one you ask? Well, if you want information’s about skill/DNA changes from the player, why not setup a nice word/excel doc that is easily accessible through a link, and editable. This way, you could have every skill/dna there and people could comment on what they want.

Don’t that sounds like a good way to get feedback? Sure, I see some thread around but you guys have to go over pages of input, filter the information you want, etc. Also, you can play around the privacy of the document if you’re afraid of something happening to it. You could:

  • Make it public to all, make backup in case of anything
  • Make it readable by all, invited members can comment in (mod could invite us)
  • Etc.

I wouldn’t recommend something like this normally for a big company, but since we’re few here, it seems reasonable, and accessible. Making Googledocs about the things you want feedback on, and making only 1 thread with the link seems like a good way to supplement pools and the like.

I find myself using that tool all the time for school project, during internship and even on other gaming sites. I don’t see why this couldn’t be a thing here.

New Engine/Reboot

Okay, this a little farfetched. I’ve seen various teams using Unity (and UE4, but I mostly know Unity) to remake games that they like. I could give examples but I’m not sure if I can post them here. Anyways, the idea is to import a maximum of content from an old engine into a new one.

If we take Requiem for example, the art is already all done (items, character/mobs models, terrain, etc.) Sounds are done. What could happen is that part of the game would need to be recoded (properly, and cleanly). This sounds like a HUGE pile of work, but think about this:

  • Character movement: Already well done, easy to implement following your own model. Character are also already animated, so there would be minimal coding involved to remaking them.
  • UI: Very easy now to do in Unity. Probably the same for other engine. Could be your change to spicy things up? Add new windows that are usefull? (like, what event is going on right now, for how long, etc.)
  • Various Events/triggers: Could be fixed, unsure about the amount of work here.
  • Skills/Attacks/Etc. : Depend A LOT about the amount of spaghetti code going on behind the scene here, but this could be a great thing to redo properly
  • AI: None atm. Unless you count “lock on target + go through walls” as an interesting AI. Hey, this is like 3-4 line of code. I’m assuming that the “going through wall” part is simply because of memory limitation. Doing some raycast around the target to make sure that he doesn’t get himself IN something is also not that hard to add. Maybe even some path finding? Anyways, I’m assuming that this is purely memory limitation; wish could be solved in a new Engine.
  • Moving from one area to another, loading maps, etc: very easy to redo

I’m not saying that this would be an easy job, or even a fast one. I’m just wondering if a REBOOT of Requiem couldn’t come from something like this, not just patching the game some more. Like a big expansion, a “Requiem II” reboot.

Private Servers

Is there a reason that private servers aren’t a thing?

Why couldn’t this be an option? You could even charge the server owner a (reasonable) price and let him have control on that server. Maybe with that, frustrated players could make a server with friends and adjust the game to what they judge fair, or even mod it.

Anyways. I hope this can give you guys some ideas.

I had more but this will do for now.

(Also, sorry for any typos, almost 4 am here)

You think someone who can't run happy hours properly for years could make such changes?
1. they never listen to players (in fact they do the opposite, non-intentionally but they somehow manage to do it every time)
2. if they implement anything, it's a recolored NPC, and mall stuff.
3. there is a reason why this game was/is rated 18+, gore and "nudity" is not one of them but people with jobs, credit cards...go figure.

List can go on and on, and we all know, at this point there is less than 0 chance to revive this game.
