i did mine in MS paint...

Could just use GIMP if you set it up properly with the right brushes, hotkeys and ez palettes. Otherwise GraphicsGale works really well, or Photoshop if you can stand all those context menus.

 

I personally use Grafx2 though. It's light, precise, has a wonderful UI and is scriptable!

Hm... Is that pixel art? I think it's more normal art without anti-aliased lines.

The intent was to have the artist make their own background for scenes.

I don't mind people borrowing weapon sprites, etc. Just please don't go overboard.
