Before RO, the original development team at GRAVITY made a RPG known as Arcturus: The Curse and Loss of Divinity for the PC. NPCs from the game were put into RO as a sort of Easter egg thing, but since the game was never released outside of Korea, the references are lost on non-Korean RO players.

Some years back, GRAVITY announced that they would be making a MMORPG version of Arcturus.

http://news.mmosite...._online,1.shtml

So Oda and Campitor, I'm wondering if anything came out of that or if that's an abandoned project. (And if the CMs think that Arcturus Online is a competitor title, I'm just going to be dumbfounded.) I think Arcturus Online would be a great addition to WarpPortal if it's still in the works. If done right, it could be a decent competitor to a certain online game about a tree.

I have heard nothing about any Arcturus Online but its not like were in the meetings for everything Gravity does.

This video reminds me a lot about Chrono Trigger and I REALLY wish whoever was playing it would stop jumping so much.

Maybe you can sneak it in the next time you guys contact them?

"Yeah, we're still waiting on those updates from 2010 and how about that Arcturus Online?"

Here's a playthrough of the RPG with less bounce.

Gee, that looks almost exactly like RO.

Looks like they made RO with the same graphics engine.

They did this before RO?

Then why do the graphics look more modern?

Well, RO did get hacked early on so they might've dumbed down the graphics as a result.

Weird that it was never released outside of Korea, because the UI and menus are all in Japanese...

Client size maybe? When RO was first release everyone was still on 56k modems (mostly) and you still had to download things.

Second video the graphics look a lot more like RO - I withdraw my original statement. I think they just used the same graphics engine, with a different UI.

That could be the explanation - they weren't able to make a new graphics engine due to the hack.

I noticed that, too. Maybe Japan got a taste and didn't want to share?

Yeah, it came out in 2000.  It probably has 'better graphics' because they didn't have to worry about the strain of having multiple players on the maps together.  Honestly, I think RO graphics, texture wise, look significantly better and fit better with the style.

They also have ROM hacks in other languages, so that might be why.

Well the textures are probably the same as in RO it's just because RO is a mmo and thus has to be able to work on many low end pcs for a maximum audience it is likely the RO textures are just low res compared to a single player game. Also that quality of textures in 2000 with 300+ players on your screen probably wasn't a winning combo. Personally it reminds me a lot of grandia.

Arcturus came out 2000 and RO came out in Korea around 2001-2002, but it's possible they could've been working on both at the same time.

SoundTeMP did the music for both games, too.

Googling some more about this and apparently there was a Japanese version of the game published back in 2003 (scroll down to the Arcturus section): http://www.hardcoreg...any-sonnori.htm

A website I found for the japanese version of it: https://www.falcom.co.jp/arc/

There was a group fan translating it to english years ago but the translation project has been idle: http://www.revolve-t...g/arcturus.html (they later merged with another group, mirror moon but the project still remained on hiatus: http://mirrormoon.or.../idle/arcturus/

Ah, so it did come out in Japan after all. Still only Korea and Japan players having access to the official release, though. :< I guess GRAVITY didn't have enough money to release it to more than 2 countries.

Majority of their R&D fund is being put into mobile currently. Logically it's ideal to say they could have scrapped the project.

Arcturus Online never made release/"gold" statues. The game was a joint project between IMC Games and Sonnori or more specifically between Hyakkyu Kim and Wonsul Lee, but Sonnori was dissipated by its parent company Locus Games, so the plan was scrapped. Complications regarding the IP ownership amongst Ironnos, Turn-On Games, Entreev and Nihin Falcom is its biggest roadblock to fruition. Basically, the game development ceased and dev team members all went separate ways to work for different companies.

tldr it's an abandonware.

Well that's disappointing. So much for that.

Wonder why GRAVITY would bother announcing Arcturus Online if they knew the original development team wasn't with them anymore. I thought it was kind of weird that they would even consider it.

Because they already had it in production and it would be a waste to simply drop the project just because the original development team left. Game industry isn't just about development team contest. If a team is well-known, then it's good. Other than that, it's just the matter of releasing a game and getting profit.

My opinion from the start (this thread was first on irowiki.org) was that the 3d environment/textures are identical to RO's, which tells me the art assets were re-used for RO, and probably the same game engine. Likely this game was abandoned and the assets were re-purposed to RO so that RO could launch sooner.
