Today, I decided I would find out what a Premium Account is all about, so I thought I would purchase a 30 day membership "as a trial"..no complaints so far.
Anyhow, I was thinking (as I often do ) about the many ways a "free-to-play" game can be so successful and enjoyable to the players while generating enough revenue to sustain a game like this for so many years. It really amazes me that a game I enjoy so much could be FREE! Not to mention, I have always been impressed with the dynamics of ROSE and the operation in its entirety. I admire the creativity and hard work of all the people who have put so much thought and effort into every little detail of this game..that also includes all the volunteers who have invested themselves with little or no expectations.
Well, to get to my point, after purchasing my 30 day membership, I noticed something new under my "Name Box" (I am not sure what it is offically called), but as I hovered over that little emblem it stated "Premium Account" and for a minute or two..maybe longer I felt kind of special..like I had just joined an elite group or became a part of something a little prestigious. I know it might sound a little silly..as I read what I am writing it makes me feel kind of like a dork; but what occurred to me at that time was that, I think I am a pretty average person and if it could make me feel like that then there are probably others out there who could possibly feel the same way.
However, this is when I thought what if that "little emblem" was visible to other players, not like I really care if other people know I paid for a membership or not, but when "regular" players see a "special little emblem" by a Premium Players name (let's just say kind of like the mobs have) it may just entice them to want to be a part of that "prestigious group" or at least to know more about it. Peer pressure can be a powerful force, even if indirectly and as I have played ROSE throughout the years, I have noticed that a lot of players follow what other players at higher levels do..I think it is kind of human nature, because it happens all the time in every aspect of life. Most people want to be a part of the "in crowd", whether they admit it or not.
Furthermore, you (the game managers) could even offer incentives. Perhaps, once you reach certain levels you could purchase Premium Memberships for discounts or possibly receive some kind of bonus..maybe level 100-199 10% off and level 200+ 20%. Obviously, the details would be up to you.
You could also figure that people would be talking about Premium Memberships more in game. One player will ask another what the "emblem" next to their name represents and I am sure the perks of Premium Memberships would be discussed by others; because people are curious and too many of us are "keeping up with the Jones'".
Regardless, even if not one penny was generated by doing this, there would be relatively no loss. Perhaps some time and planning, but not a lot money. And who knows, it might even prove to be lucrative.
Just a thought...
