Quite some time ago there was a cool player loyalty event that rewarded player loyalty when they logged on and talked to this NPC:

http://www.playragna...ail.aspx?id=128

Could be fun to re-introduce this mechanic/npc for some time. Possibly but not necesarry with new rewards.

Yeah, dude. That was when playerbase was falling to sub-300 population. There was also a dude that gave out freebies every day in Eden. They're probably saving something like that for when population goes low again.

Pretty much all MMOs and online games in general use daily rewards to great effect. I really don't see why RO's players/GMs are so adverse to it.

It gives people something to strive towards, to log on for, usually accompanied by further rewards for staying logged for a certain period of time which both keeps people online and pads pop numbers so they're more favourable to spectators and interested 3rd parties whom may not (yet) be sold on the game. While people are in-game, I assume most of the idea's detractors would think that they'd just be afk and waiting for the timer to expire so that they can collect, but every minute they spend in-game is incentive to get up and actually play. You've gotten them to log in where they may not have done so otherwise.

Then you might consider the rewards scheme and tiering. For every day you log in, you might be able to get a small number of reno crystals, a stat buff, or an EMB. Things that do not themselves translate into zeny-in-hand but with persistence and continual logging will reward the player with items of greater usefulness that they can sell for a small profit, or things that facilitate their gaming experience and motivate them to do stuff when logged on instead of just sitting afk and collecting. It's a positive, addictive cycle of minimal, concurrent (to one's normal routine due to the log-time requirement) effort for variable rewards dependent on the player's enthusiasm to stay in-game, which increases with each successive reward!

There's seriously no downside. Players get incentives and tangible rewards to show their patronage is valued. Devs get a stable pop with the potential to snowball and money to put towards further improvements.

When talking to Oda and Campitor about introducing events like these for some of the quests I was writing I was told that they didn't want to introduce them because some people were only coming on for the event and not playing afterwards. They felt like people just came for an item but it didn't actually make them play the game. (I feel like that is the case as people would use alts for extra rewards obviously) And due to limitations it wouldn't be possible to track an ip to prevent that and I believe they also said they weren't capable of limiting it to 1 character per account.

(It's still my personal belief that something like Reno would be great, give a buff and must be online to wear the timer down, then after it wears off player may receive incentive)

It's all about behavioural reinforcement and the types of goodies up for grabs. The old system failed because the rewards weren't tailored to facilitate actually playing the game. They rewarded people who could log a ton of characters and do absolutely nothing with them. Everything could be either sold on the market, directly translate into zeny, consumables or levels. That's pretty much the opposite of what should've been done.

Just take a look at the daily rewards of other, more successful games like WoW, World Of Tanks, FFX1V or dare I say even Candy Crush (who have their psych down pat btw, if you want to learn how to keep people addicted they're the guys to look at). Seriously. Homework is good.

If one more MMO title corrects to RO2 I'm gonna flip a table.

Bumping because jRO just implemented a reward system for utilising SecureOTP Mobile to generate secondary passwords for use on their launcher page (jRO's login system is web-based and integrated with the game's online homepage), and while not precisely the same thing as a loyalty event it showcases the kinds of rewards one can offer to incentivise and facilitate play.

For logging in with this additional layer of security, the player will be cleared to receive a special coin item from an NPC. These coins have no intrinsic value and can be redeemed periodically, once per week (our system would be once per day since rewards of this caliber by week are retarded). By then presenting these coins to another NPC (located in each town), the player can trade them in various ticket items called proofs, and depending on the number of coins traded, from 1 to 4, the player will receive a heap of bonuses for up to 180 minutes. Each "grade" of proof gives you new bonuses in addition to ALL of the bonuses that a lesser proof would have provided, e.g. Silver gives you both Bronze and Silver buffs, Gold gives you Bronze, Silver and Gold buffs, and Rainbow gives you absolutely everything.

Bronze Proof - 1 Coin: +5% EXP gain from killing monsters.

Silver Proof - 2 Coins: ASPD potion effect, elemental endow of your choice (180min duration!) for 30k zeny or the corresponding elemental converter, universal town warper access for 5k zeny per use.

Gold Proof - 3 Coins: AGI Up movement effect, HIT/FLEE +10, complete HP/SP recovery for 2.5k zeny.

Rainbow Proof - 4 Coins: MHP/MSP +20%, universal dungeon warper access for 10k zeny per use, gear repair along with the Gold HP/SP recovery bonus effect.

Notes: All bonuses except the +5% EXP gain will be lost on death, ASPD potion effect is based on the most powerful ASPD pot for your class, AGI Up effect and MHP/MSP +20% effects are lost on Siege maps incl. TE, warps to areas barred by access quests will be unavailable unless you've completed those quests.

We need to implement something like this for our loyalty rewards.

Yeah, my opening post was just an example of how it was implemented on RO in the past.
I liked it back then.
Even if not everyone sticked around to play after doing their daily talk to the NPC, they might chat or play one of the next days.

The reward is for logging in, that much is true - but the rewards could make it so people play that day or one of the next days.
It's also great for the RO mailing. People love 'free stuff'.

^ This isn't a thread that would concern a forum moderator, to be fair, unless things here got heated or something.

Mods being Oda and Camp. An event like this, redone to not simply be a farming tool, has potential and getting them to notice it would be nice ;p

Thank you for the tip. I've placed a link in the tiki thread, accompanied by a brief note what it's about.
