So from what I can tell from some videos, TFs are more of a PVP class with their block and high damage chains after catching the opponent.

 

How are they in PVE? Do they have decent AOE abilities like Ninjas do, or is it worse?

Twin fighters are great in PvE. Some skills got a good area of effect but compared to Ninjas the skills are more focused on clearing monsters in a line, but there are some decent aoes.
Another advantage is the high crit rate you can reach with set effects and crit based gear. The twin also can reach 400% crit dmg which is just great with the high crit rate, so it's like 1 skill for 1 group of enemys (if the spawn is spreaded you may need a "clearing" skill).
That's also the last point, the twin got many skills with decent damage, so from about Lv 50 on you will have no problems with cooldowns, since you got many skills with decent dmg output and low cooldown.

All in all the twin fighter is my favourite class for PvE since you can also speed up everything with their movement and attack speed buff so it feels like flying through the maps while killing monsters, since you can move while your twin finishes the enemys.
