Well it may be a bit off-topic, but for how long has Gravity copyright(s) for RO?

Thanks

Till further notice.

Lee Myung-jin owns the general IP, Gravity licenses it for RO.

Even if Gravity goes under the assets won't become public domain.

Oh, thanks. So they can own the mechanics forever? I really can't imagine, the Gravity will do a good remake of RO (after seeing RO2 and other hopeless tries)....

Edit: And they have it free? At cpoyright website it says, it costs $35 to register a claim (http://www.copyright.../docs/fees.html

if you want to see what Ragnarok should evolve into then look up -removed- without the periods

VModCinnamon:

The game title is word filtered for a reason, please don't bypass the word filter next time.

Laughable. That game is already doing bad because it's a linear litter box.

They don't own the mechanics. They do own names, characters (including RO-specific representations of existing ones like mythological figures), locations, and all audio/visual/textual assets including concepts. Within reason, they can claim against likenesses as well.

If you want someone other than Gravity to remake RO you'll need to wait for the license to be revoked or expire, then approach whoever represents Lee Myung-jin/DTDS about taking it up.

Copyrights are cheap to claim but require maintenance costs. Licensing fees to the IP-holder also apply which are usually fixed fees + a percentage of total earnings. Given the value of Ragnarok and RO you'd want to ensure a steady annual profit of over 500k to be able to maintain the license.

Theoretically Gravity can sue private servers, right?

But it does not profit to do so, right?

Yeah it's not cost effective and they're hosted in countries that don't tend to cooperate with those sorts of claims. There are a bunch of loopholes that make server hosting "legal", even including the distribution of client data which is where Gravity would attack from, when interpreted a certain way too.
