I believe this has been raised in the past; I forget why the CMs said it wasn't feasible though.

They need a serial number and time stamp--just two more columns in the database.

 

A serial number and time stamp could be hidden information, server side. When the item drops, a unique serial number would be generated and a time stamp assigned. Each time the item changes hands, the time stamp would update. When duplicate serial numbers crop up, all but the oldest would be deleted.

Adding names takes up a card slot on the gear itself so players would have to give up a card slot in order to have it named. Also, GMs already have their hands full dealing with bot reports, game requests, decarding requests, etc. so adding MVP gear naming services would add more to their already full plate.
