When I start up RO, the frame rate is at 60fps, as it should be
about 10 minutes in, I'll be down to 30-32FPS, annoying but still ok to play
after about 45 minutes (total) I'll get down to about 20FPS which really starts to bug me

happens in fullscreen and windowed modes, and I tried winXP compat mode. I do use multiple monitors if that matters

I have no idea why my computer is getting such low rates
AMD Phenomâ?¢ II X4 945 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.0GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4870

Framerate still goes down, and then it feels like the camera is in a vat of molasses. But it does make it more tolerable to play, for the 30 minutes of aspd pot before I relog (have to exit fully, not just character screen)

I was considering that it may be more related to my video hardware, and I found some (sparse) information suggesting this may be a more likely cause (topic title was updated to reflect this)

I have tried different options in setup.exe, notable stuff:
regular D3D doesn't work, I have to use T&L option
there are 4 instances of my graphics hardware "ATI 4800 series"
1st entry has the same result as regular D3D - black screen
2nd entry works
3rd and 4th result in a "clear" frozen screen, that is, I see everything that was open under the RO window but its not clickable, and its frozen

ATI driver issues most likely. Their drivers have always sucked.

I never had a problem with ATI drivers until recently, when the 10.8 drivers caused stuttering in WoW (turning off hardware cursor fixed it, but I still went back to 10.7)

Thats my next thing to try, is changing driver version. I did read somewhere that things can work better if you select your actual graphics card from the dropdown in setup, I'll be trying that (haven't had a chance today yet)

I found out the problem

Unfortunately, it is due to Windows 7 and using dual-monitor setup. Even if I use windowed mode on a single monitor, the problem does not show up. As soon as the 2nd monitor is there (even if RO is running in fullscreen mode) I will get the slow down

This problem apparently exists with both ATI and nVidia drivers so it must be inherent to Windows 7....

Wow - glad I'm still using XP!

Are you using the AERO interface? If so, try switching back to the classic interface.
