every wonder about some of the monsters in this game? not just about their placein mythology but things like "why does a Marionette carry around a candelabra?" just weird quirks with monster designs or backstories...

Haha, I wonder stuff like that all the time to be honest. Sometimes I'll put together "background stories" from their appearance, location and/or the items they drop.

I wish they would get more into the stories of the biolab monsters in particular. :|

Magnolias were once Peco Peco Eggs, but they couldn't evolve into Pickies because they were eaten by us, so Magnolias are now ghosts of those couldn't-become Pickies, seeking revenge.

Lots of time it has to do with the monster from mythology that it's based on

Kappas, Tengu, and all the Japanese inspired monsters are pretty spot on...

Mythology:
Dark Lord: He was a king that wanted to control a tower in Geffenia, but resulted everyone in his kingdom(glastheim) to become engulfed in darkness, turning them into monsters.
Bios:From what I understand, they were to be raised as an army against King Tristam/Rune-Midgard?(someone clarify, im not entirely sure)

Quirks:
Bonguns and Munaks
Those seals are meant bring them to life. They are based upon Jiangshi, Chinese vampires.(I think?)
(Thus, Bongun is stronger since his seal is intact, while Munaks seals are torn)

Miyabi doll seem's to be based on the japanese yokai Futakuchi-onna (two mouth woman). Her story's in the link .

There's a very long story with Nameless Island quest, and Gae Bolg that tells the story of Prontera's past kings and rulers, like who Beelzebub was, who Fallen Bishop Hibram was.
Lighthalzen/Rachel has a lot of nice background stories too, not just Biolabs, which is an amazing story by itself but there are others too such as Margaretha Sorin's background story. There are also societal/political stories which you find in the Friendship quest.
Vanberks, Isillas also have a story to them, which you find out after doing the Rachel Sanctuary Quest.

A lot of the backgrounds of monsters can be discovered by doing quests~ :3. Every time I re-do a quest on a diff character, I decide to actually read the dialogue because it's actually pretty interesting.

White Lady is based on Bacsojin (Korean name for Bai Suzhen (chinese), literally translated as White Snake Goddess) is based on tragic Chinese folk story (that's why it's in Louyang?) There are many versions of the story but the one I know is:

White Lady was a white snake who was a demon and wished to be a Goddess. To achieve that she needed to do a big amount of good deeds, so she transformed into a woman (hence White Lady), went to the Human world and started doing good deeds. Along her journeys she met a Green Snake who was terrorizing a village, she fought this Green Snake and beat her, imprisoning her and promising her to release her in some years (I think was 300 or so.) She keeps her word and free'd her. Grateful, the Green Snake also transformed into a lady and swore to help White Lady in her mission to become a Goddess (Green Maiden.) As they went on, they bumped into this Taoist Monk called FaHai who strongly believed demons should not enter the Human world, and who's sole mission was to fight and destroy demons. However, White Lady and Green Maiden were too strong for FaHai and were able to defeat him.

Fearing that they may encounter more Monks like FaHai, White Lady decided to move to the world between Humans and Demons and continue her good deeds there. One day the team arrived at a village that was suffering a drought so they decided to bring rain to it. However, Green Maiden was careless and flooded the whole town. Due to this White Lady almost lost her chance to become a Goddess but was told she can still achieve it by protecting a guy who has fallen into the demon world by accident. And so they met Xu Xian. After defending him against demons for a while White Lady starts to fall in love with him and he returns the feeling. But, in order for Xu to return to his world, there was a requirement for him to be knocked out and forcefully forget all about the demon world which he refused to do. But FaHai finds a way into the demon world and tricks Xu to be knocked out, making him forget about White Lady, and bringing him back to the human world.

White Lady goes back to the human world later on to collect human tears which is the last step for her to become a Goddess. There she meets again with Xu. Upon meeting White Lady, Xu again falls in love with her, they get married and live happily until... FaHai shows up again! He warns White Lady that demons and humans are not to be together and due to that a plague will fall upon the town they live in, and so it happens. White Lady is secretly pregnant so she seeks for FaHai's help who makes a truce with her in order to help the people from the town, they go on a journey to find some magical herbs.

On this special day (forgot which) demons were forced to transform back to their original form, since White Lady didn't want Xu to find out she goes into hiding for the day. However... yes, FaHai again! He shows up again and tricks Xu again. Upon seeing White Lady's true form, Xu is scared to death, yeah he actually dies... but White Lady manages to ress him using some magical herbs (I guess Yggdrasil Leaf) and then gives birth. FaHai takes advantage of the situation, of the weakened White Lady and finally beats her, although still not powerful enough to kill her. So instead, he imprisons her forever in the Leifeng Pagoda in China (Louyang Dungeon).

there's a short story by poe titled "the gold-bug" which can be found here:

it has hardly anything to do with the gold bug, but it might nevertheless have been inspired the ragnarok gold bug.

the story is in any case worth reading, it's basically a pirate-treasure hunt adventure story that inspired stevenson to write "treasure island". it'll also teach you playfully how to solve cyphers (secret messages).

it's very old though, so don't feel offended when you encounter the "n-word" several times.
