Everywhere I read about muse stats, people talk about max 400 INT points. But today, I had a heap of stat point to use up and just kept clicking the add button only to realise I went over 400 points.

Is 400 still the max stat - did I just waste stat points into more INT that won't improve my character anymore (i.e. you can still put points in even though it's 'maxed')? I'm not game enough to put another point in to see if it changes my stats...

When we say max stat is 400, we are talking about base stat, it means without taking into account additional stats from gear (or skill).
So yes 400 is still max stat, you didn't waste your points.

For example: you have 300 INT as base stat, and your gear give 120 INT, you have in total 420 INT.
If you don't change your gear, you can keep add INT until you get 520 INT (400 base + 120 from gear).
You reach max base stat when it costs 80 stat points to add one INT.

Ohh OK thanks, I got confused because I didn't realised INT from my gear shows up in the stats haha. So I just reached 80 stat points to INT, does that mean I need to stop adding? I thought it wouldn't let you add if you maxed it but I'm guessing it does?

When you reach 80 stat points, the game doesn't allow to add more points.
