More likely to be RAM swapping to slower disk ( pagefile since they run crappy Winservers). swapping a few gigs of RAM generally takes 2-5 seconds on 10K RPM spinning disks.I think it is abundantly clear from this trace routes that the lag is not network lag and it is the server machine choking (probably CPU) when large amounts of people congregate together!

They might be running Linux for their warpportal login stuff... maybe. But official RO has always run on winservers, I think heim said a year or two ago on one of the livestreams they had still been using Win2k3 servers.I looked at their database admin position and it seems as though they are running on Linux and Linux OpenBSD security. The software and hardware appears to be good. I think the main problem here is the commercial grade ISP they are using. I would switch ISP if I were them.
Personally I would either throw another 10-20 gigs of RAM ( per server) at the problem, or check my internal networks since the routes people are getting up to the first gravity machine during lag are quite fast enough to support play with almost no visible lag. Either they have a switch that is overloading or they are running out of RAM and the actual zone server is having to swap.

2 files to pick from
tracert.bat will create 1 file and always override that 1 file
tracert_allin1.bat will keep adding additional tracerts to the same file each time you run it in case you want to compare, etc
files are safe... they contain only 1 line of text
tracert playragnarok.com > %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\tracert.txt

So we're looking at ~95ms ping - low 20's to my proxy and low 70's from proxy to RO.
And at the time these were taken, I was getting some of the worst lag i'd ever seen in RO.
After we sent some of our allies out (reducing the number of people in the fort) the lag improved considerably...

While you can remove the first few hops to preserve privacy, they're also useful in detecting cases where lag is due to your modem/router.
I don't bother blocking out IPs, I'm not paranoid, and I think everyone knows I live in Red Cambridge anyway.
