ok i just cant get the game started. i don't know whats the problem here.. but this is what i keep getting as error message ..

"The procedure entry point MiniDumpWriteDump could not be located in the dynamic link library dbghelp.dll"

followed by the error message,

"Cannot init d3d or grf file has problem"

and the game never launches.

Heres what i have been doing:
I have installed the game as administrator, Run and patch as adminstrator and the game patches fine and but then never launches with the above errors popping up. I opened setup.exe using run as administrator as well but my graphics card never shows up in the options of the setup. My graphics card drivers/software are fully up to date and its known as 'Intel® HD Graphics Family' on the device manager, But for some reason they just never show up on the setup.exe options.

I have submitted dxdiag reports to the support as well but it seems as if thats not going to solve the issue i am having, i think.

My laptop is sony vaio z series
with i7 processor (2,7Ghz with 3.40 turbo boost)
8 gb ram
256 gb Solid state drive
and other top notch specs..
its specified to have 3d business and gaming graphics as well.. so i dont think the problem comes from system requirements.

i have tried re-downloading/ re-installing
updating direct x / update graphics card drivers/software ( but they are already up to date)
but for some reason this all has failed me..
also tried some other things the warp portal support have suggested but they failed as well.

Can you help me out please?

I hate to start with the basics, but have your tried running the client "as administrator" yet? I had a similar issues. It seems refcent updates have caused a problem with running under regular circumstances.

Moved to appropriate section and edited topic title to make it a bit clearer what we're talking about. The first message you saw is unusual and I want the key words to be in the topic line.

Make sure you are running the client as admin.

If that doesn't fix it: Run Setup in your RO folder as admin. Verify that something is selected in the top two menus. If there isn't something selected, select an appropriate option and save the settings, and try again.

If there are no options available in either of the top two menus, there is a problem with your graphics drivers or direct X (the game can't see them)

The minidumpwritedump error is strange - I wonder why we're seeing that, since i've never heard of that error coming up before. But this is a new client build, so I'm not confident that they didn't change something that would result in that showing up when the "cannot init d3d or grf has problem" error is shown (note that that error always relates to d3d and never to the grf - the client will get farther before failing if your grf is broken)

as i said above i have tried running RO client as ADMIN and have tried running setup in RO folder as admin. in setup no options are selected in the top 2 menus and no options are available either.
Yes, for some reason my graphics driver or direct X are unable to spot the game. But they are fully up to date.

is there something that can be done ?

Do you have a proper Setup? Try using windowed mode.

The D3D error can happen if the window minimizes too early (while it's initializing the graphics device) since it... well, can't do it like that. I get it when I open RO right as a popup minimizes it. It should rarely be possible in Windowed.

He just said he doesn't have a valid graphics configuration set - that's what those top two menus are for. The top two menus are blank, because the game is unable to detect any available video modes, and that is why he is getting the error. Changing whether windowed mode is in use will not fix the error, because he still does not have a graphics mode or resolution selected. Something must be selected in the top two menus in order for RO to work.


So the question is what is wrong with his graphics configuration to cause this problem. The diagnostics from dxdiag seem to imply that he has DX and graphics installed though, so this is very strange.

Try setting both to use Windows XP Compatibility mode - on Windows 8 this will fix problems with the game failing to detect the available graphics modes. However - I have not heard of this being needed on win 7 before.

Agreed - as I said, I haven't heard of it being needed before on Win7. It's worth trying, though - since we don't understand why it's needed on windows 8 - and it's less than 5 minutes to try, anyway. It's on the compatibility tab when you rightclick->Properties.

I'm not sure I know what else to try.

Program Files (x86) is default install location for x86 programs on 64 bit versions of windows. They're treated a bit differently by UAC, but this is not related to your problem.

In general, RO tends to be better behaved if it's located outside of program files entirely due to complications of UAC - But this is not the cause of your issue; even in UAC Hell, whether it can find graphics modes doesn't depend where setup is run from.

I have the same issue; works fine on my PCs, used to work on this laptop but when I go into setup there is no drop down in the top two boxes.

Admittedly I havent played on the laptop for a while (4 months?) just patched (not as administrator) and found its not working. Have tried running as administrator but no change.

GPU is ATI 3200 mobility, was previously working with the standard drivers from the HP website, I just ran the ATI driver download and no change

hey, i actually found a newer update for my graphic drivers on the intel website, installed those and then rebooted, then uninstalled and reinstalled RO .. but the same problem persists.. Now i literally don't know what to do

Fixed the problem.... after Idk 100s of trial and error methods?


I'll write about the last solution which worked.

I dunno but due to some strange, really strange reason, After running the installer as an admin, after patching it as an admin, and after running setup.exe again as admin, He couldn't see anything in the screen size and graphic driver option.

Then we noticed that after downloading the Classic RO Manual patch from WP site, that specifc setup.exe was able to detect the graphic options. But when we shifted this setup to RO folder, it didn't detect stuff again.

This led to a conclusion that there is some file which was conflicting with setup.exe.

All I did was copy paste ragexe, ragnarok.exe, data.grf, classic, clsrag.exe, PatchClient,AI,data and system folder to that "Manual Classic RO folder". Yes, I over-wrote these files. Now, of course, RO would ask for specific DLLs in order to RUN RO. We copy pasted those DLLs one by one and ultimately it worked. We did not need to copy ALL the DLLs and other files.



These are the ONLY files required for Ragnarok.exe to run so far. And is working smooth.




This is the "Installed" RO folder with all those files after installing/patching as Admin. And Setup wouldnt detect graphics card.

I had to download DrAzzy Char lost 2012-11-15 and patch it again.. cause the characters didn;t show up.

Sure there's some file in this folder which is causing the error. Dunno which. Anyway, hope this helps as a solution for any one else facing similar problem!

Also, since not all the files are there, I won't be surprised if he faces some other problem now.

Could it simply be that it doesn't work for you when it's located inside program files?

UAC treats things in program files differently from things else where.
