Sorcerer or warlock?

Gear wise are they about the same to be effective? I'm assuming gearing a warlock is going to cost a ton more vs a sorcerer? Sorry for the noob questions. I never played a mage class before. And just looking for a little guidance before I fully commit to a class.

Sorc has good AoE and support capabilities and is a great hybrid mage, while WL focuses on enemy crowd control and massive AoE.
Sorc supports by buffing allies, and WL supports by debuffing enemies. Storm Gust, Quagmire, Frost Nova, Soul Expansion, Reading Spellbook, and Mystic Amp are really fun abilities that you won't get on any other class. Safety Wall is straight OP in pvp and pve alike, and you can get it as either Sorc or WL.
For gears, WL/Sorc are lucky in that all you need to do your job is a good staff and a strong frontline in TI parties, though other equips like healclip, orlean's, raydric garment, and cast time reduction gears make you able to solo with ease. If you can get your hands on a heal clip before you start leveling, it's very easy to get to 99 hi-wiz or scholar solo, if you know where to go and what skills to focus on.
After renewal, don't bother with single target bolts; focus on either fast/instant cast spells like soulstrike and firewall, or pure aoe like fireball, thunderstorm, and heaven drive. Mages are really squishy and require a lot of tactics to stay alive, you'll be moving around a lot kiting everything while spamming slows and freezes on the entire map.
Good luck, let us know if you have any questions.

warlocks suck. the test sucks. they just suck all around. their damage is pretty garbage after 99. i know this is gonna cause hella flame from warlock fans, but theyre just in denial that their class sucks and nobody wants them in parties post 99. It sucks cuz you level as a badass wizard thinking youre top dog. everyone wants you in their parties and you just completely pwn mobs. then you get to mid and high tis and its a completely dif story. every class is outdpsing you because your cast times take too long. youre also squishy as hell so you die ALOT. warlocks have to rely almost 100% on out maneuvering monsters and using ice to crowd control (unfortunately you cant freeze undead so warlocks in mid tis right now are finding life to be very difficult)
why do warlocks suck?
-slow cast times mean worse overall damage even if initial hit looks like big numbers
-horrible cast delays
^-of course reading spell book helps immensely with these problems but requires a ton of job point sinkage to get. pretty much for VIPs only or people willing to use a ton of BMs/JMs to get it
-after 99 your only purpose is pretty much crowdcontrolling with either Jack frost/stormgust or pvp disabling with ES.
-cant mvp worth a damn. mvps will kill you in 1 hit unless you are geared to the teeth
-not wanted in woe or high TIs
all that said, warlocks are fun as hell. the payoff just isnt worth it though and the weak damage is quite frustrating. It agitates me to no end that gravity made warlocks so weak. They should be the top damagers in the game, not some background support class.
as for gear, my advice is just stack as much HP boosting gear as you can. your life will be 100x easier if you have high hp.

Sorcerer: Not really desired in low TIs when you're still a Sage class but will be desired when you're a Scholar and mid/high as Sorc, mainly for sp.

I find myself able to oneshot mobs in current mid TI with undead with ease. It's like ranger with arrow storm, with a ton more utility. I've been TI'ing all week and have had maybe 3 deaths. White Imprison and Safety Wall and Energy Coat give WL some of the best survivability, along with its kiting potential.
Slow cast times are a moot point with reading spellbook. And even without it, Crimson Rock casts in less than 1.5 sec for me, soul expansion is near instant, frost nova is instant, quag is instant, chain lightning is fast.
The only slow cast times are the wiz AoE's, like storm gust 10, meteor, and LOV, which suck after 99 (except SG).
I am one of the top dmg dealers in my parties, and I'm able to keep my party safe with huge control effects. It's about your playstyle, don't listen to people who write off a class as sucky, when they haven't taken the time to master it yet, or base their judgments on bad players who don't care.

If you're so worried about having to one shot everything, you can wear the Crimson Mora set which makes it possible to one shot many fire-weak mobs. Of course, if you're going to compare yourself to a Ranger, you're going to end up thinking your damage sucks - but let's be honest, Ranger trumps everything in PVM.
Warlock:
- Mostly used for crowd control with Frost Nova/Storm Gust/Jack Frost.
- Can contribute some damage with elemental spells, most notably Crimson Rock or Comet.
WOE: Very useful to have, anyone who says otherwise obviously has never seen a good Warlock in WoE. Can deal some moderate damage and has access to useful debuff skills.
ET: Won't lie, it's not a very useful character to bring along in an ET run but it's not completely useless. Can help with clearing mobs.
Sorcerer:
- SP battery primarily.
- Has useful buffs such as Striking, can also endow since apparently most people don't think to bring converters.
- Depending on the summon you choose, you can endow your Psychic Wave for better damage. However, the most useful element in PVM tends to be Fire since make mobs are weak to that, and if you choose to endow your PWave with that element it means have to get a summon that's otherwise less desirable than the other. It almost means you'll have longer cast time due to not having Ventus out. Alternatively, you can also decrease cast time with Ventus, increase your MATK with Aqua, or - and this one is the one no one uses - increase your MHP with Tera.
WOE: Also VERY useful to have if a support build. Damage-oriented Sorcerers can contribute as well, but I personally find the class is better suited to support a team rather than try to kill enemies, especially since the WOE sets were introduced.
ET: Definitely has a place in ET, but again with supporting. Mainly used for SP/ME, and possibly even Insignias.

I'll be honest though the gears are interchangeable so just make both and figure it out for yourself both have different play styles and don't take anyone else opinions make one for self and roll with it

WoE-related, Warlocks and Sorcerers have different roles depending on their build and gears, a good example of both classes (damage/offensive wise) is Wizard:
- Warlock (damage):
- Sorcerer (damage):
I have yet to see any other mage class player with that much amount of damage output. I think Kevinluuu had almost same output until he quit?
As for debuff sorcerer, Zerozaku's build is quite outstanding. 100%MDEF and close to 75% demihuman reduction plus the ability to default either GR/DR and/or Fire Armor, makes him a hard enemy to play against.
PvE-wise, I prefer Warlock (if you ever been in Wizard's ET party, you will understand why I say this), but Sorcerer is far more useful against MvP's and all around in general as debuff class.
I would say, first think of what do you want to do with your class and then compare the pros and cons of each class and you will come out with a class best suited for you.
Good luck.

Lol tofu... If u r stacking more hp expanser... How the r u going to stack more damage increaser.TThat why ur warlock suck... To OP, since u said u r jyst for TI & ET, i need to agree that sorc is better coz of its buffs... N genetic acid bomb is main killer
i never said my warlock sucks. i just think the class is obsolete now and needs retooling
also, its pretty much mandatory that you have to have VIP to play a warlock because you will die ALOT. with such low hp base, you will get 1-2 shotted by most high lvl monsters. its just not worth it imo, but to each their own (everyone should play what they like and not what others tell them is good). i have both a sorc and warlock, and my lock is collecting dust. sorc is waaaaaaaaay more fun to play

Again thank you for all the suggestions. I decided to just make both. First I am focusing on the WL, he is already level 101 and I am having a blast with him. And thank you mulder for the link to those WoE vids. I can't wait to partake in them soon.
No problem, glad I was able to help. You should PM someone more knowledgeable, I'm just repeating what I remember from what Haseo (wizard) used to say before on game. I see him around sometimes, you should ask him.Wizard shared some tips with Nero and Jenioaks, you should ask them about it.@killedbytofu: It's all up to the player, no matter what class you play, if you can't play well, it will be the same for any class. I have seen what Warlocks perform quite well solo and in party. I guess, you gotta get use to the class?

What the ..!? Killing other players is "fun"? There is a special place in hell for such action.sorc is more fun. you can kill players outside of pvp by cast canceling them and buffing the monsters that are attacking them. mind breaking Elders in TI this week = endless hilarity
