we already have a (nearly) official answer; first reply. "this is against Terms of Service."


tho, i've heard a LOT of people who are interested in it.
i'm one of them; i'd love to get full UI customizability, including wow-like control of text placement etc.
so that in my custom UI, i can "accidentally" forget to put a marker up for the automated global "gratzs" spam from colo, and.. whatever is spamming who-got-an-item. srsly, does anyone care about that message, when it isn't their own name up there?

Pretty sure AmiiMii is not an official. So it doesn't count as a "Nearly Official" answer.

Although it would be nice to know if it is allowed, or not. Editing the files seem rather easy since they're TGA files openable in any image editing program.

I'm not an official, but i know how to use gamebryo efficiently and modify stuff used by engines, and re-create. i know the stuff forwards and backwards. I used to be a Creative artist. NUFF SAID.

If you have a strong interest in doing this, it might be something to take up with Njoror and Zanbee, who can work with Heimdallr to make it a possibility. If you want to contribute, maybe make some concept UI art to show them how you would customize it and perhaps the devs could implement a way to easily add custom UI skins that are non-invasive. With all the hackshield shenanigans and given the terms of service, I would strongly advise against editing any resource file directly.

I also agree that the UI is garbage and really is an eyesore, and actually made me not play when I tried SEAro out. I'm interested in seeing this happen.

Well, I now feel quite stupid. I'm so used to work with layers that I didn't even think of looking at the channels that exist in the TGA file. Lo and Behold, the Alpha Channel already made and ready to edit.

Loving my UI without all the useless huge borders cluttering it. I think I gained some 50% more visible area in my screen.

Here are two screenies. This is very basic stuff, I still have to clean up some edges that show here and there and tinker a bit more with some textures.

I focused on removing those horribly oversized borders we have everywhere on the main UI. I may think about working on other things like threat meter, inventory bags and so on down the line.

I don't know about you guys but just removing those huge borders is already a huge relief for my eyes and it increased my viewing field quite a bit.

Actually, i'm kinda working on a SAO-Like UI, though it's not going too well..

The problem with changing the appearance and placement completely is that you have to edit the UI's script files. Someone who has the patience, please feel free because I don't have the patience to go through that messy code.

Not really code i have to deal with. It's really easy, i'm trying to figure out concepts, the art is really hard to figure out. I've got all the Buttons sorted. it's just the main interface that i'm dealing with.

Changing the looks is relatively easy... changing the placement of the elements is the real pain.

Maybe I'll find the patience to at least find out the position values for the combo gauge and get it out of the middle of the screen... :p_sad:

Amiimii, is that pic with the icons already changed or just photoshoped in? I've been messing with the icons and I find them a PITA to change... :p_swt:

Or maybe I've spent too much time away from image editing (years literally)... I don't know.... :p_sad:

Photoshopped in, also re-created the interface using source images, there's a bounding barrier for each potential bit, so you can't strain past the area the actual interface was suppost to show (too large, and it'll cut off in-game, too small and it'll look horrid, keep within the bounding barrier, you'll be fine)

I noticed... I also noticed a few elements have parts spread throughout 2 or 3 TGA files... which is extremely annoying. For example, I found one of the progress bars "here" and the box surrounding it was "over there"... :pif:

What I find most puzzling is that they had better-looking (design-wise, not layout-wise) interfaces in kRO2's beta tests. I don't know why the Korean playerbase accepted the leather-bound interface we're stuck with now. Any one of those previous UI designs look much nicer than leather and stitches.
