I'm only speaking of this from experience with Requiem. We started to edit the vdk with custom textures and models. After a patch those changes only stuck for one login then they turned purple.

It won't happen here unless they change the "write" properties of the game so custom patches won't be allowed for the game, and the custom patches aren't actually patched into the game itself (So to speak), it's separate, so they'd have to do the same as the other game (which is another companies, not allowed to speak of it) to stop custom patches from changing graphical elements but using the original VDK files and implementing custom stuff into the original ones are a gigantic NO compared to this game, which uses the gamebryo engine, however to simply put it, the only reason why they turned purple there, is because they either patched over original elements, OR stopped custom VDK patches being applied to the game.

hmm that's interesting, they prob added something and the offset changed. This messes up the file completely and you won't be able to extract it unless you do it manually, you might have a change.
Err, I'm not going to say anything else more or my post will be deleted.

I've had a few players ask me if this is allowed.

You won't get banned for changing your UI, but we don't support it because if something changes in the files and breaks your game, we can't support it.

So, we won't punish you for making changes, but we can't be responsible when it breaks.

Otherwise, these look cool!

Thank you for answering! I suppose this shall become the UI Texture editing thread.

Lets do our best to make the UI clean and crisp!

You get X program to extract the file xx.xxx. You can use plugins from photoshop or gimp to edit and save. Once you are finish editing those files, you use program x to create the xx.xx with your edit.

In the Requiem situation the changes worked for awhile. Then we got a new patch and the VDK changes would from then on "break".  It was rather obviously shot down intentionally.

Some of the skins/models/interfaces that came out of it where way more cool than the originals. Maybe it was a dev jealousy patch.

And you can be assured that the folks that where working on the Requiem modeling are plenty competent enough to get it right.

Most developers don't want their game to be changed, which is understandable coming from requiems point of view.

Nice to know that there was approval from Njoror BTW.

I have no chance of understanding how to do such changes on my own without a guide for dummys. Is it possible anyone can guide me on how to make my text box backround a solid coler (say white) instead of transparent. I would love you forever! =)

Text box backgrounds are controlled by different files rather than TGA, or DDS

Better not mess around with them, could cause damage.

I dunno if we are allow to, but you can google Dwar and vdk and there should be a link to his forums. I haven't gotten it yet because of the rules. Good luck! I hope to see results!

I wouldn't say I'm giving you permission.

I'm saying that we don't punish anyone for modifying their files. If changing the files breaks or bugs your client, then we can't help you.

It's more of a "Mod at your own risk", but we won't punish you for modding, as long as it's just UI changes.

Though it's nice to get a reply from a CM about this. Thanks Njoror C: *Gives Cookie*

As long as it keeps to graphical changes per say, which is a good thing C:

Make sure you repack as version 1.1 and not version 1.0 otherwise it will not work and not display the hud.

1. Do Not replace the original VDK. Leave them ALONE.

2. Place a CUSTOM VDK, DO NOT REPLACE THE ORIGINAL  ONE.

3. Do Not Modify Other than the graphical files , any more than that (something i call "deep modding" is considered punishable)

Are we allowed to edit the UI Textures in the VDK files listed under the Data folder?

If we are then we can make a less cluttered UI based texture, because I for one do not like the brown everywhere.

We have gotten permission to edit the UI, However they will not give support if we break or mess up the VDK files.

VDK files are located in

Normal Installation

C:\<Directory you installed in>\Ragnarok Online 2\Data\

or

Steam Users

C:\<Directory you installed in>\Steam\steamapps\common\Ragnarok Online 2\Data

378a504ab5.png

The VDK is called "UI.VDK"

The program you can probably find on your own.

Inside the UI.VDK you will find a number of folders and files.

Most UI texture files you will find under UI.vdk\UI\Texture and the names will start with Rag2_<Base/Btn/Con/Damage/Hud/Icon/Option/OutGame>_<Number>.tga

abdca91370.png

These files can be edited with free art applications such as Gimp, and Paint.net.

Lets see what everyone can come up with!

PS: Make sure you repack as version 1.1 and not version 1.0 otherwise it will not work and not display the hud.
