Behavior of Luciola Vespa

Posted Image

When Episode 13.1 Ash Vacuum, "The Beginning of the Otherworld", was first implemented I did the "Onward to the New World Quest" on my Lv 99 Super Novice. After completing the time consuming quest I ventured to New World through the Dimensional Gorge. When I arrived there were some people talking about the insane monsters out in the field and people had chat rooms up saying "Beward of the BEES! o_o" or "OMG WTF BEES!".

Cautiously I journyed out into Splendide Field. I first ran into Pinguicula, which my Twin Edge of Naght Sieger (Fire) easily sliced through and disposed of them, but then I ran into Luciola Vespa, the bee, and I was like, "OMG...AGI UP...Freakin Speed Pot...RUNS!!". It didn't chase me and it didn't even flinch. I decided to take it on head on without really reseaching about it. I defeated it, but it had brought me into Mental Strength and was about to kill me.

Deciding people were overreacting I announced to people fishing in camp that the Luciola Vespa was passive. I escorted a Lv 85 Priest out into Splendide Field who was doing the "Finding a Fairy" quest. I brought along a Lv 99 Fencer mercenary to accompany us because I still didn't know what to expect in the New World. As we approached a Luciola Vespa, it quickly maneuvered past Wayne, the Fencer, and myself and stabbed the Priest dead. I was like, "WTF...". Right after it killed the Priest it went back to its innocent passive self. We tested this with some other players and talked about it in camp and determined, the Luciola Vespa is level discriminatory against non-Lv 99s.

=====================================================================

My question and topic to discuss during this system maintenance is...

  • Why are Luciola Vespa passive to Lv 99 characters?
  • Will there be monsters that discrminate level in future maps?
  • Do you like or dislike monsters like this?

I think its pretty nice, it made those maps A LOT less painful. Since they 'can' be quite brutal when attacking, I think if they were constantly aggressive to everyone it would make it more chaotic. Not so much the first map, but the one with nagas...

I always thought it was made in mind of the whole, New World is 99+ concept. And that is why they are passive to 99, and maybe they will be passive for 99+.

Overall, I'd like to see it more in the future. The whole "oh man, you are so powerful I'm not gonna mess with you...but I'll poke your friend over here Posted Image." But really I don't think it should be so bad that within share range parties, that they have to worry about the lower level aggroing normally (as in they don't aggro the majority of the party) un-aggressive monsters.

I heard it's an A.I. thing. Why exactly, I don't know, maybe to discourage lowbies from going there once renewal hits and people are able to go above 99. There probably will be more monsters like that.

Well, I was just thinking that. If its to brutally say "Hey, you really shouldn't be here" then I think it works well. ;)

It's level 104. Maybe being within 5 levels of that mob makes it non-aggro?

â?¢Aggressive only to Lv 98 and below.

^Is the description that amesani has.

Luciola Vespa have a specific AI that makes it aggressive only against players that are more than 5 levels below it. It is a level 104 monster, and 5 levels below it is 99 which is why it's passive against level 99 players. It's a new type of AI with 99+ content in mind, and expect to see a lot more level-based AI behavior in Renewal.

Ah ha, that explains why Tatacho are still aggresive to me even though most databases say it's passive. It's Level 106 and that makes Level 99s at least 5 lower levels than Level 106.

This explains a lot to me~!

Oh that makes a lot of sense now. But it is still cool to think they don't hit the 99 auras XD

On another note, are you bald? I would pull all of my hair out, remove my eyes, and pull every single tooth in my mouth before 99'ing a high novice.

Luciola Vespa's behavior is a little more complex than that. What they do is go agressive on any player that is more than 5 levels below it. It works out pretty well because the vespa is level 104. In the future when you can go higher than 99, it will be more obvious that they only aggro noobs. ;)

Edit: Damn I'm slow. :(

This is awesome. ;)

It's very annoying to have monsters weaker than me keep trying to kill me when I'm targeting other monsters. I'd much rather leave them to those who would benefit better from the EXP.

Would this also apply to minibosses like Vocals and Eclipses as well?

Tatachos have a weird AI. They switch between Passive and Aggressive modes. Bradium Golems are the same way.

As far as I'm concerned, if it has a chance of aggroing without being provoked, it's aggressive!

When I first got to New World on my 99 sniper, I tried ctrl clicking a Vespa, which quickly raped me. I was like "Good thing they're not agressive!" Then I went to level my beast strafe hunter there, and was confused why they were chasing me. Gotta say, they make it a lot harder to level on the splendid maps when you're trying to avoid them.

Not quite the same I don't think, similar though. I find that Tatachos chase after me MUCH more than Bradium Golems. Which works for me, cause I only kill the Tatachos anyway.

Yes, it is VERY spastic and somewhat hard to predict. ;) Fiber Lock doesn't make things that much easier, especially for Centipedes and their Ganbantein.

I always did find it somewhat strange and annoying how in lots of games even monsters many levels lower than you will aggro on you like they can do a damn thing.

This poison spore is attacking my knight, and it can't break 1 damage.
Why does it insist on an assisted suicide?

And so on.

Is a nice feature. Maybe in the future we will see monster agro to specific classes, or allways attack first the less lvl ppl on the party. Or maybe attack from distance and run from high lvl people and close combat-melee the ppl on the same lvl or below thems. Probably all that changes will be more fun to watch and make monsters more smart and of course, increase the game's difficult.

If they go overboard with it though, it could be frustrating for higher level characters who are trying to mob hunt the lower level monsters.

For instance, TI3 event would suck if the turtles didn't aggro anything higher than level 80.

Hunting Marc Card card would be similarly unpleasant.

Imagine seeing stronger monsters in renewal doing the opposite thing. "Hey! They're 5 lvls higher than us! Mob them!" *Rapes the unfortunate higher lvled players that happen to be soloing...*

Wouldn't that be the point for the developers tho? So that people would only level within their range of monsters and so forth?

I remember I was 98 and had my level 99 slave following me. I was so damn confused as to why it wasn't killing my priest. Idk it's kind of annoying, but it's better than having it own everything.

But in RO, higher level players need things from lower level monsters, and there are few low level players compared to high level players. Unless the developers change that, it is stupid to force people to fight only high level stuff.

Prey tends to run AWAY from the hunter. They're not supposed to come to you with open arms like lambs to the slaughter.

Ideally, leveling within your level range of monsters is supposed to award better EXP. But the game as it is now does not support that as levels mean nothing. A level 45 Mage can easily get killed by a couple of level 19 Male Thief bug if the Mage doesn't cast magic quick enough. And then you have low level monsters that aggro players that are FAR out of their level range, which leads to mobbing which leads to lower level players not being able to level on monsters that are within their level range.

But in RO, higher level players need things from lower level monsters, and there are few low level players compared to high level players. Unless the developers change that, it is stupid to force people to fight only high level stuff.

They're not forcing high level people to ONLY fight high level monsters. They're just buffing the AI so high levels can't just look at them to get them to aggro and leaving low levels in the dust. You can always smack a monster to make it aggro you if you want to mob them.
