Greetings,

I am having an issue running Ragnarok Online on Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

After installing the game, and the patcher automatically pops up and runs, I am able to get into game only that once. Unfortunately, everytime this has happened, I have not made it as far to make my character and pick out stats because I am usually alt-tabbed reading something else. I play in windowed mode, everything set to default, so nothing has been changed (the screen is fairly small on 1920x1080 resolution).

I am curious if anyone else has had this issue and what they did to resolve it. I have tried various compatibility settings, and the game itself is in my default games folder, C:\Games\ so it's not in a system or otherwise protected folder base. I run without UAC, under an administrator account, and have even tried running the individual .exe's with "run as admin" to no avail. Also, I've tried running shortcuts with the 1rag1 parameter at the end of the target string, no luck.

Here are the pictures I experience from the moment I click Play on the patcher, after it has finished its routine.

This is the first picture:

This is the second prompt I get right after clicking "play":

this is the contents of the "view problem details" from above:

and this is the last prompt I get before all processes end:

I am hoping someone has some insight into this issue. I've submitted a ticket but no word yet. I remember playing this game a long time ago after a friend introduced me to it, but had to stop due to school. Now I am eager and wanting to try it again, brand new, but I keep hitting these obstacles!

I also run Bitdefender AV software, but disabling it did not help either. Also, as far as routers rulesets go, everything is greenlight for both Ragnarok and Ragnarok Classic.

Again, it's weird. The game runs fine immediately after I install it and patch it, I am able to get in game, log in with my RO account information, and see the 9 slot character select screen and create a character. If I close out, I can never get back in.

  • Scan for and remove any rootkits from your computer using both Bitdefender's Rootkit Remover and Kaspersky's TDSSKiller.
  • Scan for any remove any malware from your computer using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
  • Check for and repair any corrupted system files.
  • Update your device drivers to their latest versions — especially your GPU drivers.
  • Check whether your RAM is faulty. (It's usually best to do this overnight.)

Greetings,

I have done all of the above that you have recommended. I have used MemTest86 and Windows Memory Diagnostic tool, both of which show 0% fault/failure and 100% passing.

I just reinstalled the game out of curiosity to see if it would work, and it does:

Screenshots to show I am in game, with all default settings.

I exit the game. Click on Ragnarok shortcut, and click Play on the patcher...

I just recently dealt with a Sirefef/Trojan on a friends computer, and am familiar with all of the aforementioned rootkit killers and Malwarebytes softwares. Personally I use Bitdefender Total Security 2013.

Edit: I am running the System File Checker now for a second time. Afterwards I will check my drivers. Is there any legacy software I need installed? Older version of DirectX? Older runtimes?

Thanks for your reply

Ok, nothing has come up so far. I was able to yet again, uninstall the game, reinstall in C:\Games\Ragnarok Online\ and play successfully after loading up and patching right after installing. I played for roughly 30 minutes or so, killing drops in the training grounds. I exited the game on the esc menu and went to desktop. When I tried running the game again, I got the same Ragexe.exe error.

It seems the game runs fine right after I install a fresh copy, but the following times I try loading it gives me this Ragexe.exe error. If I uninstall and delete the Ragnarok Online folder and reinstall, I can play again.

I see.

Is there no way that you know of to successfully open the client after it has been closed? Does restarting your computer have any effect?

The IRO client's only dependencies are the Visual C++ 2008 and 2010 run-time libraries (the latter is actually a dependency of the NoSpam extension).

This is a bizarre problem and I therefore need to spend some time pondering how to tackle it. I'll reply again tomorrow if I have time.

At the risk of being silly, did you try patching it with Administrator privileges? I've seen UAC do all kinds of ridiculous stuff to the RO client.

I've UAC set to Never Notify, and am on an Administrator level account. I'll go ahead and uninstall and reinstall. I am not given an option to Run as Administrator from the right click context menu for the .msi installer file. Also, right after it finishes installing, the patch client comes up and begins patching automatically. This time I exited out of the patch client while it was patching, and right clicked Run as Admin on Ragnarok.exe. It looks like it picked up where it left off, and finished. When I hit Start, I got the Ragexe.exe has stopped working error. This is the first time running the game since installation, which would normally work, but in this instance, it does not.

The only way I can get in game is to uninstall and reinstall, let it finish, let the patcher run, and then click start. If I exit out of any of those programs along the way, I am back to the same error routine shown above.

Played some more just now. Picked up a Mage Manual from the trainer and was using Fire Bolts on Lunatics. The screen is very small, I wish I knew a way to make it larger without having to exit the game.

Really hope there is a reasonable solution out there. I'm not sure what is so different from others Windows 7 x64 installations than mine, excluding antivirus which has been tested relentlessly.

:p_sad:

Hmmmm...

So it works only immediately after a reinstall - and stopping the patcher and re-starting it is enough to spoil that first-run magic?

This was just a FileWatch session from installation to first run.

I'm looking through the files now that were modified but not seeing anything that is configurable.

If the cause of your problem was simply an overt bug in the IRO client, then other people would also be reporting it. There must be some condition specific to your computer that is triggering the problem — it could be your Windows configuration, a conflicting piece of software, or faulty hardware.

Have you run any diagnostics on your HDD or checked for entries in the Event Log that suggest there is a fault with your HDD?

If I were you, I'd clone the contents of my HDD, uninstall all third-party software, reinstall the IRO client, and then test whether the problem persists. If it does, then I'd perform a repair installation of Windows and then retest. If you're unable to isolate the cause of the problem or you make a mess of your Windows installation, then you can simply restore your HDD to its original state using the clone.

I am almost certain this is not a hardware problem. The symptoms are totally inconsistent with a harddrive problem as Axylus suggested - if the harddrive was on the fritz, the behavior would not persist after a reinstall; either the system would choke while trying to uninstall/reinstall (much more likely), or the behavior would be different after the reinstall (because the files are written to a different part of the disk). And he'd probably hear the click of death anyway. It doesn't match expected behavior for CPU/RAM/Mobo problems (random freezes, particularly under load - but this is not random, not a freeze, and happens regardless of load) or GPU problems (as with CPU/RAM/Mobo, but with graphics anomalies as another symptom).

I definitely think it's a software issue of some sort.

Do you have any third party security software running? These crashes frequently are caused be interactions with third party security/antivirus products, which by nature have to peer into the workings of other programs, and don't always do it perfectly.

Other than that, I'd probably give up and reinstall windows.

I'm definitely thinking it is something with possibly a read/write permissions issue, something in a configuration of the game after launching for the first time that is preventing it from running afterwards. I've gone through and double checked all of my drivers which are up to date, as well as operating system updates. No dice.

I did have an intermittent problem with FFXI awhile back that would cause a kernel-power error. I never was able to resolve that issue, and in it eventually caused me to quit playing.

Bitdefender Total Security 2013 is the only thing I can think of, and I've thrown every exception I can see within firewall rules and virus, even disabling it outright, to no avail.

Well I finally received word on my ticket. They had suggested to remove

    - patch2.txt
    - patch_allow.txt
    - notice_patch.txt
    - all files with .gpf

these files and patch. Unfortunately my launchers would crash right away.

I now uninstalled and reinstalled per their instructions and sent in DxDiag files.

We'll see!

Removing the file data.grf from the client folder is like removing the engine from a car. I don't know why that was suggested to you.

Although I think it would be a waste of time, if you want to investigate what is happening when you run the client for the first time, then I'd suggest that you use Process Monitor. You should create a filter that only matches file system events that affect the client folder and its subfolders.

He removed files with the .gpf extension, not .grf.

gpf are patch files, which the patcher downloads to the RO folder, and merges with the GRF and then deletes.

the grf's are the main data files, and yeah, those shouldn't be deleted - but I don't think he deleted those.

Oops. I misread EggShen's post.

If you only deleted those files, then I don't know why the updater crashed. The updater only crashes if you delete .grf files.

Actually, I deleted the .grf files because I couldn't find any .gpf files ... I thought it was a typo.

Well, that explains it, lol.

I will just another fresh install and test these things out.

@Axylus: I will try out that Process Monitor if this current attempt fails!

Ok, reinstalling and all, no .gpf were ever left after the launcher completed patching. I tried deleting the patch2.txt, patch_allow.txt, notice_patch.txt files and run the launcher again. It patched quickly and when I hit Start, I got the same errors as I have been getting all along.

Trust me, you won't succeed in resolving the problem by tinkering with the client.

If you want a quick and dirty solution, then you could run the client in a virtual machine. Running the client in a sandbox using software such as Sandboxie may even work too.

Lol, oddly enough I've a Windows XP box running off VirtualBox that I was going to install RO on ... however, I'm about a gig too short to install. :(

Will wait to see what the official word is for now.
