I couldn't make up my mind on which fellow to spotlight for this maintenance OP. Both have quite an enduring legacy in their respective fields so I figured might as well do both!
Osaka born Kenzo Tange was a extremely brilliant Japanese modernist architect active in the postwar period. Born on September 4th in 1913, throughout his career he applied his modernist theories on how to blend modern technology and manufacturing techniques and traditional architecture to a variety of gigantic structures. Due to the need for new architecture after the war, many young architects like Tange were able to make their mark on the urban fabric of a recovering Japan, sparking something of a golden age of modernism in that country. I was fortunate to have seen a couple of these landmarks during my travels.
Tange's work didn't end with architecture, his background in urban design also led to radical proposals for redesigning Tokyo and Japan on a grand scale. This is the 100th anniversary of his birth, so I'd certainly have to forfeit my Architecture degree if I failed to mention Mr. Tange.
Also being honored today is Disney Legend Imagineer X Atencio! Born in 1919 as Francis Xavier Atencio in Colorado, he started working for the Disney studio in 1938, paid 12 dollars a week and worked as an apprentice animatior before the war. Returning from service overseas in WWII, he returned to the studio and ended up working on what would become Walt Disney Imagineering. Walt had asked him to write a scene or two for a ride that was being developed and ended up writing the entire script and song for the original Pirates of the Caribbean ride. He also worked on the song and script for the original Haunted mansion as well, tasked with finding the right balance of funny and scary that defined the lengthy development of the ride. He provided the voice for the skeleton trapped in the coffin and for the voiceover that plays when the ride breaks down (which it often does).
