Hey, I wrote a few weeks back about sorcerers in the colosseum, and now here is the wizard guide. Wizards have constant dps and that's the main difference between them and sorcerers. Sorcerers will destroy anything with the right setup, but colosseum is random and fly by skills are needed and that's where wizards do well at. They excel over sorcerers for defense and with DOTs are great for trolling players and snatching kills while sitting in a block of ice. Don't let the sorcerer hype deter you, wizards powerful really well and constantly with the right strategy.

Unlike the previous guide, I actually got a win with my wizard after my 4th time entering colosseum after hitting level 50, so this is a winning strategy for the colosseum. However, like last time, I will be dumbing it down to the point of explaining skills, it is what a BEGINNER guide is, and so here we go.

Useful Skills

Fire Flower (5/5) - probably your best move in stealing kills and racking up damage. The best strategy with this is to just throw it around on random players and monsters and hope that someone doesn't finish their target so you take it.

Fireball (3/3) - I spam this move as my opener against anyone I am trying to kill. After I throw this move then I use Fire Flower so they have 2 DOTs instantly and creates panic on them. Use this skill as much as possible, it is your strongest skill outside of your explosion, and you won't see it that often.

Firebolt (5/5) - This is your basic skill, use it just to stack on quick damage, you really don't want to kill anyone with this skill, unless you have, minimum, 2 DOTs on the target already.

Teleport (3/3) - Your main advantage over being a sorcerer is placement. This is your offensive defensive skill for either escaping or killing. If you are chasing a ranger and they use their speed buff, teleport and catch them to keep the damage on them. If tanks are attacking you, teleporting could deter them away from trying to finish you.

Seal Explosion (5/5) - this skill has multiple uses based on playstyles, so this will go into sub-sections. Not based on importance like above because they are all equal and situational.

Water Explosion - I am a defensive wizard, so I run around with water emblem already on. This seal explosion is of course for preserving your life. If you are being attacked by one player and holding a decent rank, explode and teleport away. Most players will find you unattractive at that point and will look away, generally.

Fire Explosion - The most common explosion. With criticals backing this, you could 3 hit kill 8k health characters. This move is very powerful and very useful at the start of every round. This is how you rival damage of a sorcerer without the setups and luck factors behind it.

Wind Explosion - This is arguably a "better" dps explosion than fire. Wizards are capable of hitting over 70% haste with it and can even quickly access their explosion skill, so racking up damage is extremely easy with this explosion. This is a momentum explosion, use this when you have at least 50% pyro points.

Ice Wall (vary) - Use this in the last 15 seconds if you are under heavy pressure and need to survive to pass or win colosseum.

Frost Nova (optional) - Useful for handling melee but not game breaking. Good for quickly locking someone down so you can walk behind them and attack them.

Lightning Bolt (vary) - This is used to kill running targets. With DOTs also on the target you could start using this if they are running from you if they are at 2k health or less and it should still kill them quick.

Strategies & Targets

Everyone is a prime target when using a wizard. You deal strong damage to the non tank classes but you can take tanks down in time reliably. You can out damage a priest heals and keep up with a ranger dps (build depending). Fire Flower several enemies and just run around the colosseum. Don't try to kill every thing you see, keep shifting targets and keep moving unless you are attacking. If you take any damage just teleport and run. If they chase you down, you have distance on them and can DOT them while they approach you.

Priest - Use as many DOTs as possible on them, and hit them with fireballs. Best to use water emblem against them since they will be DOTing you back. With explosion you can heal and attack while they try to keep their health up from your attacks. If you are using fire, attack powerfully if you know they don't have their full health skill, if they have it, you will waste your energy and lose the fight. Wind should have no trouble since they will gain their explosion the fastest, and can stun priest to the point where they can't heal themselves.

Rangers - Use wind/fire emblem. They don't care how much you can heal, so you have to keep up with the damage. Pound them as they pound you and attempt to frost nova them if you can and walk behind them if possible. This is the battle of DOT dps, so explode when you have momentum if you are wind, or at the beginning if you are fire and hope for the best.

Sorcerers - Fire emblem easily. They can either attack or heal, not both. If you see them starting to use memorize or frost diver, teleport behind them and use frost nova and start destroying them. They can't attack back and won't be able to heal fast enough against 3 DOTs. If you get caught by frost diver, use ice wall when you see Varetyr Spear coming and they have no chance of winning the fight. Possibly the most BnB fight in the book for you. Note: If they switch to Earth Emblem, just run. You won't do nearly any enough damage to beat their healing and when they are ready they will just nuke you instantly.

Alters - I have no true strategy against them besides them being mostly light, so take full dps against them and take them out.

Melees - No disrespect to them, but about all of them can be handled the same. Keep your distance and Frost Nova if you have it. DOT them and attack if they are low but if not try to avoid them since you will waste time attacking them and MOBs would be a better worth of your time than attacking them. Sins will be the most annoying due to their speed buff, but they don't have good defense so freeze them and attack if you want or run away if you like as well.

I don't list items because I don't want to encourage item usage. You can use them obviously and they will benefit your game tremendously. If you have anything to add feel free to write your comments and opinions below. If anyone wants my tree for this feel free to ask and I will edit this. Good luck wizards.

My 2 cents, proven by experience: priest 1v1 - if they have RoG lvl 5, they will kill you eventually.

Ranger 1v1: you stand no chance unless you freeze them and use some strong damage pet to help you dpsing.

Sorc: ice wall cd is much longer than VS cd. But water emblem explosion and potting can sometimes help you kill them.

assasin: you can't run away from them. Better target them whenever you can and kill them as often as possible to avoid meeting one in round 5.

I haven't lost to a priest yet 1v1, in the colosseum, but I will keep an eye out for that.

I have kept up with several rangers for dps without pets, my only pet with my wiz is zealot and it just lowers defense, which i don't use. I did mention to freeze them though.

If you can't kill a sorc within 25 seconds, you aren't hitting hard enough. Staying behind them helps a lot and if they use memorize, ice wall them but if they are using cold bolt, it is a thing of chance from there. Try to see if they get an extra wind emblem under their name and ice wall immediately to dodge it. Sorcs you have to kill fast and keep them on their toes so teleporting behind them is major key for slowing them down

Sins, you really can't run run away from them, but like other melee you can deter them from trying to chase you. If you see them coming for you attack. If you want, I can make an extra note for them if you feel it is necesary.

Firebolt is your main killing skill along with Fire Flower. After you Fire Flower your target, you just pound them with Firebolts and any instant-Fireball procs until they drop. Besides Flame Explosion, there isn't really any "finisher" skill, so you just finish people off with whatever works at the moment. Most often it's Firebolt, sometimes Lightning Bolt.

Speaking of Lightning Bolt, you can't forget about it. Even if you have it at only level 1, it lets you deal damage while running which is very useful when you're chasing somebody, or if you're strafing a melee. Since it has no cast time, you can try using it to finish off people who have no HP left too.

Myself I never bother hard casting Fireball, only the instant procs. The 2 second cast time just seems too detrimental in Colosseum where you don't want to be a sitting target. If you're using Wind Emblem then maybe it'd be more bearable.

A head on fight with a Sorcerer is going to be a loss unless:

  1. You use Ice Wall, but sacrifice having it available for 1-2 rounds. I'd rather save this to survive round 4 or 5.
  2. You start the fight with 100 Pyro, so you can stun them when they Varetyr. Very satisfying but very rare.
  3. The goddess of RNG smiles upon you and their Varetyr misses.

You can try freezing them and Teleporting behind them, easier if you max Frost Driver as a PvP build. Sorcs are usually going to open the fight with Frost Driver though, so most likely you'll be stuck at their mercy.

A smart Priest will kill a Wizard unless you freeze them and get behind them ASAP. Even if you survive their initial assault, your HP will be too low and somebody else will swoop in and finish you off before you can do anything to the Priest. (Since people would much rather kill the Wizard rather then spend a long time fighting the Priest.)

As I mentioned, the emblem that you use greatly alter the match. When using something like the water emblem, fighting a long battle with a priest doesn't seem as difficult since they are dealing 10% less damage to you while you are healing 5% hp back, keep in mind you can explode the seal to better endure in the fight. Priest won't use their big attack until you are around 3k health and that means they have to wear you down slowly, and that's why water emblem will work the best against them.

I can use Ice wall at least 2 times in the colo so using it to survive an attack early round 1/2 isn't that big of a deal, and it is at level 1. Getting behind a sorcerer and freezing them is how you win that fight quick and easy, and teleporting easily helps with that. If they switch to Earth Emblem and start healing, run, you won't win that fight, I will edit the article for that.

Thank you also, totally forgot about lightning bolt.

I don't mind using fireballs since a lot of the time, I am attacking someone from the side and I like having constant DOTs on them. FireBolt just doesn't do enough damage and a critical fireball is good damage. I am currently using water emblem in colosseum, eventually I will switch to wind, and I absolutely hate using fire emblem since it feels worthless.
