I've tried gimp in the past and gimp in my most recent animation. I personally dislike it because it doesn't address tablet functions very well and is pretty hard to utilize tools.
You should try some free programs that come with Wacom Tablet such as Photoshop Essentials, or Corel Painter. I use SAI which has the smallest learning curve and allows you to do what you need to do.

I use SAI and it has taken me about six times longer than openCanvas or Shi Painter (oekaki) to learn how to use well.

GIMP is sort of a free alternative to Photoshop. Those of us in the office without a PS license use it, it's certainly not as robust but if you're looking for a decent (and affordable) art tool it does a lot of the same stuff.
