Are tanks needed in this game?
What is the best tanking class? (I really want to be Crusader/Paladin/Royal Guard though...)
Can I still pvp effectivly? It isnt to big of a deal if I cant but itd be nice to hold my own or be usefull in it.

Thanks!

You can be a tank, but don't try to be one early game - tanks need killers to work in a capacity as a tank, and in early-mid game, killers don't benefit from having a tank - they can kill fast enough that they don't need a tank.

And go Sader -> Pally -> RG for a good tank.

Uh, whatever you do, don't trust guides that were written before october 14th of this year, when renewal was implemented.

Renewal changed everything (huge game mechanics changes to make room for third jobs), and the builds that used to be good, are no longer good (not necessarily at least). I'm not sure how to build stats now quite honestly. I've figured it out for some of the classes i've got high level chars in, but i haven't the faintest for a new char.

Skills are a lot easier, atleast. Imp HP Recov 10 and Bash 10, and prerequisites for sader skills would be where to start. Ask in class specific forums for more information.

For your archer friend, level 10 of everything except arrow shower, level 9 arrow shower.

Once you get to crusader and can get sacrifice you'll be able to keep your archer friend safe :P And of course there are lots of ways you'll be able to get in on the killing too. The two of you should be a potent combo and I think you'll have a lot of fun!

Absolutely yes.
Ragnarok sucks in many aspects, but still i love it. Most mmorpg have different classes and yet, they're all just the same thing, with different skills animations. Every of them can solo almost all maps. Even priests.
In ragnarok, every class has a distinct role in a party, be it pvp, pvm or woe. My first and favorite char is a pally, and i just love to be 'the shield' in a party, where quickly casting sac may save the party or even break a pre-cast.
I don't know how things are after renewal, but if you're gonna be a 'full sac' (no martyr's reckoning), don't expect to be powerfull in pvp, except that you'll be freaking annoying to champs, which will get their sp drained by gloria domini (thus, spending sp itens or making you laugh with their poor asuras). Also, should you step onto magical strings, you could kill some hw by spamming gloria domini.
