Im just wondering, when you increase physical block and magical block, does it also increase your damage reduction?

As far as I'm aware, increasing physical and magical block will increase the amount of damage you absorb/reduce when you block.

Are you 100% sure about it though? Cause i haven't read anywhere in the forums which really explains how the blocks work.

I tested it and that's what it should do.

Damage reduction is based on your defense/magic defense and the opponents level. (also any pvp or pvm modifiers but they are calculated independently). Since increasing physical or magical block strength does increase your defenses you do get further damage reduction when you take damage even without blocking. Keep in mind though, this scales extremely slowly.

Not necessarily. The off-hand defense passives increase physical/magical block but not your defense/magic defense values.

Ok so it does increase damage reduction. My question now is how does it scale though? Lower than how defense/magic def works?

Increasing block strength no longer influences damage reduction. Only defense/magic defense and the opponents level do now. Blocking is a different modifier all together.

Defense scaling works something like this:

  • Raw damage is derived based on attack power.
  • A percent modifier is derived based on the attackers level and the defenders defense or magic defense.
  • That variable is multiplied by the attackers attack power to determine damage reduction.
  • Max damage reduction from defense caps at 10% (that is 10% of the damage if the defender had minimum defense).

Blocking works like this:

  • Block chance determines if an attack is blocked or not.
  • If an attack is blocked, the attackers attack stat is subtracted by the defenders physical or magical block value.
  • That damage is then multiplied by the damage reduction modifier.

Any pvp/pvm bonus modifiers are applied after after.

Was about to write a lengthy response, but it seems Phish has already wrapped it up.

Like stated above, there's three levels of damage reduction.

The one that works first would be wether you successfully block or not, this is a flat reduction to damage.

After that is your defense/magic defense (see Phish' explanation)

And last but not least pvp/pvm bonus modifiers.  (Note: the last two may be switched around, but this will not make a difference since both are separate percentage reductions and work in a similar way)

Not sure if i understood it right, but it seems like the one i highlighted just contradicts each other.

So no matter how high your block physical/magical is, it has nothing to do with the damage it reduces "on a successful block"? Or no?

It seems like im getting it already. Block Physical/Magical doesn't affect damage reduction "IF" the damage isn't blocked but it only affects the damage reduced if it blocks.

Like he mentioned before, he's living a bit in the past.

What you said in your last sentence is right, block physical/magical affect the damage reduction of a successful block.

However, before the grand skill update, increasing offhand defense also increased your normal defense, which is why he said that. This is no longer the case though.

Ok now i finally get it. Dumb that i did not analyze and understand the word "BLOCK" Phyical/Magical completely . It just make sense now that it should only reduce blocked damage, from the word itself.

One last question. Lets say i have 2k physical block, if i increase it to 3k physical block it wouldn't make much of a difference right? (Since i've also read your guide and you said its not worth it to increase physical block)

Hmm it depends. It's been a while since I last took a good look at my guide so I forgot where exactly I said that.

I'll just say this: If you're using a sopdu shield of tutankhamun (15), and have all the shield passives, you will have 3100ish block, not even counting in your dex yet. Because it is already so high (a successful block will mean a flat 3100 dmg reduction to the opponents damage, which is enough to block auto attacks completely and is even capable of blocking some skills), there is no longer much need to improve it even further.

If you're at about 2k physical block, you might want to increase it a little, but the higher your physical block the less it'll really matter. Over 3k is more than enough.
