I just bought my wife a new laptop, an HP Pavilion Touchsmart sleekbook, which runs Windows8. Got the comp setup and running, got RO setup and running without a hitch, and she's enjoying playing RO on her new toy.

Only 1 problem. The F keys. When she goes to hit an F key, she has to hit the fn button first. If she hits, for example, F12 without hitting the fn key first, it puts the computer in airplane mode instead of the game displaying the hotkey bar. Does anyone know anyway to fix this?

Yeah, thanks so much! I spent a good amount of time looking for some kind of program that managed the F keys, and even went to the HP site. Being a new computer (and me being new to anything after WinXP), I didn't know how to locate the manual yet. It was hell just trying to figure out how to get into the file system to save the RO installer. xD Thanks again!

Honestly, if a pc didn't have physical F-keys, and needed you to hold down fn to get function keys, that alone would be a deal breaker. Why do manufacturers think that is acceptable??

That's exactly what I was thinking. Hitting an F key is more important than putting the comp in airplane mode or turning the volume up and down when you can do that at the desktop screen.

Well you bought it for her... (Also, just noticed it's HP - that's why they think it's acceptable. Lousy company, lousy products)

Most civilized systems with F-keys shared with special function keys have you press the Fn to get the special function, not for the F-key. See if there's an option to switch that (maybe in the BIOS) or have some other way to enable "F-lock"

Already taken care of. Even though the default is set to have the f keys act as the special keys, turning it off in BIOS makes it to where it's reversed, you have to use the fn key to make the functions work on the f keys. And yeah, the comp is an HP. Not the greatest investment, but I'm still a little weary about spending money to build one myself. >_>;
