After sending a ticket to your customer care which took about a week to reply to me I am left with very little options but to seek help from others because everything I do seems to be futile.

This error has never, and I mean ever, happened before until this past week. I play the game with absolute zero lag thanks to lower ping which really gives me my money's worth of service. However this past week I could not even connect to the game OR to playragnarok.com. I would always get 'Failed to connect to patch server' when I try opening my warpportal client and 'Oops! Google Chrome could not find playragnarok.com' when I try to access their main site. After seeing the correspondence of such, I immediately ruled out that my problem was the game. Why? Because if their main site wasn't working for me, how can I possibly connect to their patch server? With, or without lowerping or other VPN clients, I would get the same frustrating error both with the main site and with my game.

Usually this error is associated with DNS troubles so I decided to change my ISP's DNS. I used google DNS and OpenDNS and I got the same problem. I even called my ISP and harassed them to fix my DNS and which they sincerely did but to no avail. Yesterday, I called my friend from Indonesia and asked her to take care of my pet for me because I was disconnected without putting my Miyabil Doll in her egg shell and I was worried that some sort of bug might cause her to disappear. And then it happened, my friend told me that she was also getting 'Failed to Connect to Patch Server Error'.

Today I finally received your customer support reply and I was disappointed though I am grateful. My net might be too slow he says, I need to send a screenshot of my error he says. I am skeptic of these theories and requirements because number one: no matter how slow someone's net is, playragnarok.com must be accessible and the only difference would be on how fast one can access it. Number two is that, there is nothing to be gained by taking a screen shot of 'Failed to connect to patch server' because it's simply just that. It's not error number blah blah blah, it's just simply 'Failed to connect to patch server'.

I am now inclined to believe that the problem might not be from my side because other people from other countries are experiencing the same thing and both of us were able to play the game with no lag at all two weeks before. I am in SEA and I play NA League of Legends with 120 ping so I'm really skeptic if it's my net because I've seen others play the same game with 350 ping and connect to the warpportal launcher and access the playragnarok website. I would appreciate some help both from the community and the admins, gms or other form of authority this place might have. Thank you.

Did you try some of the suggestions in the forums about failed to connect to patch server?  I get that problem sometimes and some of the suggestions help.  Funnily enough, most of these problems start happening after updates, until you find/get some help, the best thing you can do is be patient.  Can't tell you how many times I made the problem worse by trying to fix it myself.

I have tried and none of them works. As I said, playragnarok.com itself isn't accessible for me. Back then whenever this happens, I just access playragnarok.com from any browser and then the patcher fixes itself like a charm. Now it's as good as dead. I am frustrated because I am a VIP user currently and that time is ticking fast. It doesn't help my case that the support team takes decades to respond. I remember one event where I submitted a ticket and the problem was resolved after a couple of days which is already long by my standards but I thought to myself 'at least they read my ticket and fixed it in response right?' WRONG! Two days after it was fixed, I was sent a reply to my ticket making it obvious that they haven't read my ticket yet until after the problem resolved itself.

I did some troubleshooting and got a response that the DNS server is not responding but only, and I mean only, for playragnarok.com. Interesting enough, playragnarok2.com which I thought should have similar results since they're sort of sister sites (or maybe I am wrong) is accessible without problems.

Based on the information you've provided, I think you're correct about the cause of the problem being related to DNS. The fault almost certainly lies with Gravity's DNS servers, which randomly fail to respond to queries due to being faulty. The servers have been faulty for a long time, but Gravity has neglected to fix them.

When I'm unable to connect to the update server (patch1.playragnarok.com), I can resolve the problem by simply repeatedly opening the updater until the DNS query succeeds. I'm puzzled as to why this isn't also the case for you. Fortunately, there is a workaround you can use instead:
  • Open the start screen or start menu.
  • Type "notepad".
  • Press shift-control-enter.
  • If a User Account Control dialogue window is presented, then answer it affirmatively.
  • Press control-O, type ""%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts"" (excluding the outermost pair of quotation marks), and then press enter.
  • Append the following lines to the file:

    128.241.93.13 playragnarok.com
    128.241.93.38 patch1.playragnarok.com
    128.241.93.38 patch2.playragnarok.com
  • Append a blank line to the file.
  • Press control-S to save your changes.
This procedure will save the addresses of the domains you're unable to resolve on your computer and thereby allow you to permanently bypass DNS resolution for them. Be aware that there is one small caveat: if the addresses of the domains change in the future, then you'll be unable to access the corresponding servers until you update the hosts file with the new addresses.

Regarding the reply from the WarpPortal's customer support team: their explanation is nonsense and should be disregarded.

Oh gosh thanks, this helps a lot! Though, may I ask if in case there are changes would it be safe to just erase the appended lines?

And you were right, back then I only needed to randomly try a couple of times before it succeeded but for some reason the problem this time around could not be resolved. Your suggestion helped a lot! Though for some reason im still not able to connect to playragnarok.com through any browser but I guess that doesn't matter since the patcher problem is resolved.

You're welcome. :) Let me know whether it works.

Yes.

Edit: Eh? You should be able to access the web site after making the change. That is very strange.

Yes.

That's a relief! Knowing that it's easy to backtrack if something changes is a big thing. Thanks again!

Yeah the site works now. Still can't believe gravity neglected to properly fix something so integral.

No-one will be able to help you unless you state exactly which part or parts of the instructions you're unable to complete. :) Please also state which version of Windows you're using.

Follow the instructions for modifying your hosts file in my second previous post.

You must press shift-control-enter while the start menu is open, not after opening Notepad. This will cause Notepad to be run with administrative privileges. Alternatively, you can right-click Notepad's entry in the start menu and then choose Run as administrator.

The instructions are applicable to Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.
