Is there anyway that I can bypass UAC only for all ro exe files? I don't want to turn off UAC system wide completely. I just want it off for RO.

I think RO will be unimpeded by UAC if you install it to a location that windows doesn't consider special (not in program files - windows places special protections on the program files folder).

You may still have to run setup as administrator for classic - not sure.

yea my RO is installed at C:\ not program files but somehow UAC still covers it

what happens is that default UAC setting dims screen and the existing RO window crashes. Last night I lowered the UAC level by one, it no longer dims the screen, which doesn't crash the existing RO window anymore. Although I still need to go through UAC confirmation pop up.

at least that's something :wah:

Oh, the UAC notification - that'll still fire when you run RO, because UAC is still enabled, and RO always runs as admin.

It doesn't look like there's an official way to disable it for one application only; Microsoft indicates that this is intended - see this microsoft support thread: http://answers.micro...48-f395bf1c519d though one guy there suggested an addon. I cannot vouch for it though.

The Program Files and Program Files (x86) folders aren't treated specially by Windows; the only special property of those folders the set of restrictive file system permissions set on them.

Please could you describe exactly what happens after the UAC dialogue window is presented?

Yes they are - they're effected by UAC File and Registry Virtualization - if a non-admin process modifies files under Program Files (as well as Windows, and maybe other places), the file will be written to the virtual store, and thereafter, that user will see the modified file, but things running as admin (or another user) will see the unmodified file. My understanding is that this is in addition to normal file permissions. This feature-from-hell is enabled on windows 8 even if UAC is turned all the way down - and if you force UAC completely off with an appropriate incantation, you can't run any metro apps. Including some of the windows settings apps.

screen dims and a pop up ask for 'yes' or 'no' to confirm if I want to run RO

If I have RO window/windows not minimized when UAC popup, the existing RO will immediately crash.

What I did is lowering UAC setting by one level, which does not dim the screen anymore but still has the pop up confirmation window. This way, RO won't crash even if it's not minimized.

I am running RO on Bootcamp on Macbook Pro mid 2010 model, windows 7. Maybe this is somehow related to my hardware?

wow windows 8 sounds really bad for RO. does this mean I have to install windows 7 if I got a windows 8 PC? Most of new PC on the market now are pre-installed 8
