Hi there,

I am still rather new to RO, even though I do have a Royal Knight. My second devoted character is a mage, and I could really use some creation help!

Basically, I am not so much interested in sage as I am scholar (to support my friends) and sorcerer (to do badass things I've seen a friend do). I still have to go through sage, but those two classes are my goals.

Now, my issue is stats. I am not sure about placement, or when I should put points where. Things I've read about sages make my eyes cross in confusion in this regard.

Should I just purely invest in Int until 99 and then work on something else, or is there a specific pattern that's good for aspiring scholars and summoners (and reluctant sages)? Would appreciate your being as specific as possible if you offer guidance, since I'm still rather new, as I'd said.

If it helps, I do like to solo, and I have no interest in PvP.

Thank you very much!

Level?

Just starting out. Only 8/7, I think, but I worry that I may have kicked off in the .wrong fashion for a sage/scholar/sorcerer to begin with. Rather fix the foundation now, while it's easily fixed. :)

I'm just asking for a guide on how to allocate my stats for that line of classes, I guess, and in what order (i.e. Int to 99, then Vit to XX, then do Dex to XX, etc). Basic PvM character.

My opinion for ordinary spell caster leveling sage/scholar.

Stat build -> Int//Vit/dex no agi (str is optional for weight cap or buy gym pass)

Pay attention to Vit for your survivalability.

Phen clip is required at around lv 60 or best at lv 40 for elder willow hunting..

So, I made it to Sage today. However, aside from Free Casting (which seems like a given), I have absolutely no idea what skills to take! Scholar has always been more my goal, after all.

Any guidance would be welcome. Here's where I stand (anything can be changed if desperately wrong) ...

BASE STATS

Str/Dex/Vit 1

Int 70

Dex 24

Luk 9

MAGE SKILLS

Cold/Lightning/Fire Bolt 10

Fireball 5

Fire Wall 10

Frost Driver 2

Sight 1

At this time, I'm made with a bolter in mind. Always grateful for help!

having LUK is ok, but i won't bother getting any before you reach third class

try to start pumping vit for survivability. agi is ok if you have flee gears, but not recommended

for skills, not much to consider except deluge or heaven's drive. you can always reset and try things while you're still below 100

Basic Sage Leveling Build[edit]
  • STR: 1
  • AGI: 1
  • VIT: 60-80
  • INT: 80-99
  • DEX: 50-80
  • LUK: 10-30

Skill build: Skill Simulator

Sages start off with decent Magic AoEs with Thunderstorm and Fireball, and can pick off single targets with bolt spells. Unfortunately towards later levels (after about 85) it may not be possible to one shot monsters anymore with the bolt skills, and Thunderstorm and Fireball may not be reliable or quick enough to use. That is why players should prepare their builds with a decent amount of VIT for survivability to tank the monsters while recasting during solo leveling, or also survivability in party situations. Later levels will be spent either aiding with additional damage and Endow buffs in parties, or finding mobs weak to the Earth element to AoE with Heavens Drive. The rebirthed Sage, the Scholar gains access to very useful SP giving / recovering support skills with Soul Exhaleand Indulge, and becomes an extremely useful support class.

A bolter sage is like 90 intelligence, 90 dexterity, 20 vitality. I would not "pump" vit. As a non transcendent sage oh you will be doing with a bolter build is fire bolting geographers and goats etc trying to one shot them without being attacked. Or using thunderstorm in a party situations. You don't need tanking or flee stats for that. You have so few points as a non-trans, you can't really afford to invest your points in too many places.

Realistically it is better to go support sage and just deluge and such for parties. A good bolter needs variable reduction gear, great matk, and imp/siroma accedssories. So its expensive to do well.

i can still get ~60 VIT with 90 at both INT and DEX. unless both INT and DEX are maxed, i think it's possible to go over 20s for VIT.

this seem a little bit personal, but wasting bgems on a glass cannon that cant even kill fast is quite a pain.

and yes, good bolter requires quite an amount of zeny, but at least a decent bolter is still affordable...

Lets be realistic. without awesome gear you probably won't even finish the cast bar on thunderstorm before the mob is dead in turn in :(

You all see my dilemma. Everyone appears to have a different view on how to build a soloing PvM sage. There's been a debate just since I posted for help. ;)

Some people seem to think it can work fine, whereas others think I should give up and just be a support character (which would make getting to trans level painfully long - I'm physically disabled and can play all day solo just for my sanity).

... Anyone care to power level a sage? :P

Just do eden gramps turn ins until 99. You will reach 99 before you even figure out what build you want / what build you should have. Soloing, especially at higher levels, needs a lot of gears, consumables, and knowledge of the game. Even a lot of veterans don't solo much. Sages in particular are a bit harder to solo with compared to other classes too.

Luckily, in terms of skills, you can experiment quite a bit since skill resets are free if you are level 99 and under. You can experiment with AOE skills, single target skills, support skills. In fact, you can even optimize your build for each week's turn in monsters by resetting each week.

If you don't want to do turn ins (best exp by 1000x!!!!) You can solo with the stats/gear/monsters I mentioned above.

Geographers->goats->magmarings
(Fire)->(water)->(water)

i solo'd my 99 int/dex sage until 96 or so before using TIs for the last few levels, but i could have definitely gone all the way to 99 soloing.  I just kept doing the juno bounty boards and doing bulk turn ins.

even without expensive accessories, you can one shot grand pecos and goats with one level 10 cold bolt.  this eliminates the threat of getting swarmed by their assist mechanic.

harpies and sleepers are aggressive, but you can use that to your advantage with vertical firewalls (or even multiple firewalls if you want to be sloppy).  sleepers are also pretty slow (and occasionally use a skill which makes them move even slower, so you can outrun them even while casting); harpies are your only real threat out of those 4.

for sleepers use firebolt while they run into firewall and harpies use heaven's drive.

Harpies are good into the low 90s.

The request boards in eden 2 aren't bad for 90+ leveling.

he doesn't need a Phen clip.

I got my mage to 93 without one.

at lvl he should be hunting Groves, at lvl60 hunting Geographers.

I actually ended up hunting Grand Pecos and Whispers to 73 or so. Now I am pondering where to go next.

Admittedly, the issue of a non-interrupt piece of gear has been on my mind. I have a Phen card, currently unslotted because I'm looking for something that'd be good to put it on, but an Orlean's Gown would slow my casting less. However, that comes at the price of losing all of the benefits of my Eden Uniform III. What to do? :)

One thing to note is you can't wear orleans gown till you trans. So you can't wear one as Sage and can only wear it when you are a Scholar.

Well, that does simplify things, doesn't it? :)

Now, to just figure out what to slot the Phen card into right at this moment. There's no sense in waiting since I'll have to go through everything over again with transcendence.
