Hi all,

I've played RO for about two months or so at this point, and for the duration of that time, there were absolutely zero technical issues. However, after I died one day in ant hell, the loading screen froze. Blue screen of death followed. It was an entirely unexplained event.

This problem has since persisted, but it doesn't happen every time I zone. There seems to be no consistency, and there isn't always a blue screen; it will sometime just lock up the computer and force a hard reset.

This problem only happens when zoning, period. Were I to stay on the same map for ten hours, I could kill/chat/whatever freely and have zero worries. I've tested other, much more demanding games and they have demonstrated no problems.

I wish I had a full transcript of the blue screen, and I'll try to get it if it happens again. However, I do know that it said something about a clock and secondary processor.

So, to wrap it up, with my appreciation for any help ...

Problem: After two months of playing without issue, I suddenly began locking up or getting blue screens on zone loading *only*. This followed a character death in ant hell. The crash doesn't happen every time I zone, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when it happens. When it freezes, the only way out is a hard reset. Blue screen mentions something about a clock and a secondary processor. No other games have issues.

Computer Model: Alienware M15x

OS: Windows 7 64-bit

Processor: Intel Core i7 CPU - Q 740 @ 1.73GHz (8 CPUs), ~1.7GHz

Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M, 4GB

Things I've Tried: Complete uninstall and reinstall, scanning for malware and other sneaky things with Malwarebytes, leaving the computer to cool for extended periods (still got errors before it was even warm),

Bluescreen on Windows 7?

That's pretty exotic. Do you know exactly when it happened? Specifically, whether it came with the WoE TE update (that was the last client exe update, I think), or whether it came at a different time (which would lead me to suspect that something else changed on your system).

BSOD is typically driver (or OS) issues, or hardware problems.

It couldn't have started more than two weeks ago, probably on the lower end of that range. Sorry, I know that's not very helpful, but it's a recent problem after a couple months of flawless play.

Given that I'm having issues with RO and no other game or otherwise using the laptop, I am reluctant to believe hardware failure is the issue at hand.

May have discovered a root issue? I still can't explain it, but it's apparently related.

I went to YouTube a little bit ago and the Adobe Flash plugin crashed. Reloading the page did not help. I uninstalled Flash and returned to YouTube, which worked much better until I reached a video. That's when I was prompted to reinstall the plugin (as expected) and the problems resumed. Plugin crashing, script issues, having to choose between continuing or stopping the script.

Now, when I try to start Ragnarok, the game doesn't load after the launch window. As in, I don't even get to where you have to agree to the Terms of Service before logging in.

Followed some instructions online and Flash is now working again. Youtube videos load fine, and Ragnarok starts again.

I wonder if this will fix my original problem? I can hope! :)

Sadly, no such luck. I thought I'd fixed it, too.

Although doing the Flash reinstall did fix my Youtube issues and continues to, I locked up when zoning once again while playing RO. This happened after a couple of hours, so I'd honestly thought I had resolved the problem. Bummer.

Any other ideas?

You should use WhoCrashed or BlueScreenView to identify exactly what is causing the crashes instead of guessing. Additionally, you should check whether Windows's event logs contain any clues as to the cause of the problem. If you want me to help you do these things via TeamViewer, then send me a private message. :)

By the way, it's unwise to assume your hardware isn't faulty simply because the RO client is the only application that triggers the crashes. I've encountered two cases in the past where a person was unable to play RO due to their computer's hard disc drive being faulty, and the RO client was the only application affected by the fault. Assumption is the mother of all mistakes, as they say.

That's a thought with the hard disc drive issue, so I've transferred a copy of RO to a USB hard drive I have. We'll see if running the game from a different hard drive corrects the issue.

If it doesn't, then I will probably reach out to you and see whether we can't pin down the issue.

Well, I played all night tonight after the transfer and didn't have a single issue. It seems that there really may be some sort of conflict between my computer's main HD and the game.

In any case, so far (knock wood) I am playing fine off of the USB HD.

If that fixes the problem, that's not a good sign for your HDD - you might want to backup critical files to that USB stick too.

Yeah, I've backed up my libraries to the USB hard drive, as well.

It'll be very unfortunate if the main HDD dies on me, though it shows no other signs of trouble at this time but for the crashes on RO. I'm physically disabled and rely upon this thing for a connection to the world - and to distract my mind!

Wish I had the income to buy a newer one. This Alienware has been a workhorse for me for several years and I'd readily buy another from the brand, but sadly, disability does not make one rich.

you wouldn't need to buy an entire new system; only the hard drive.  alienware is owned by dell but they do not manufacture hard drives of their own anyway; they just put the machines together.  you should be able to order a replacement harddrive from newegg or amazon for pretty decent price.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't know how to reinstall the OS and such things, nor could I afford it (the last time I was able to hobble out to the store and look at such things, anyway).
