They are completely different games. The only thing in common is the names. To answer your question, no you don't need to.
However, once you become disappointed with ro2, I surgest you try out ro1 and see why it's the best game ever made

RO1 is a lot better than RO2. You don't need to play RO1 before RO2. If you play RO1 before you won't even enjoy RO2 anyway.

I tried RO2 and it's horrible, then I played RO1 and yes it's the best MMORPG you can play on the planet.
I'm new to both RO2 and RO1, but now I'm playing RO1 only.

The only games that are worth playing online atm are RO1 and DFO.

RO 1 Renewal suck, RO 2 suck even more. RO1 classic is the best, better than WOW and AION
