i think the npc was in for past tlapd events; you can check pront to see if he's around.  probably quest flag popped up because they're reusing some code from prior years; you find sealed envelopes via fishing this time around as opposed to killing random monsters.

hooking a kraken tentacle at byalan using normal rod and squid ink. this bait gives me better hooking since i hooked it several times already so i believe squid ink is the correct bait.

no, it is 15 blue whales and other etc items (witch starsand, skirt of virgin, emerald, amethyst, gold, immortal heart, tendon, detonator, stem, blahblahblah).

btw i caught an octopus in comodo using normal rod and clam flesh. octopus worths 10 points.

also is it just me, i always got my dialogue cut out frequently each time i fish at niffleheim and glast heim.

the one in byalan missing also. dang, i dunno but the cut out dialogue when i was fishing appeared more often now. no, cut out dialogue is not a failure, if u fail it will say "your catch has escaped."
please fix this problem.

i've never gotten a catch escaped message; i was under the impression that the cut off dialogue represented that instead.

Nice tip on the squid ink; i will need to try it.  i've hooked a tentacle once so far but i was not using that bait (fresh fish i believe).

i've also never managed to hook a regular squid (byalan) or a jumbo shrimp (ayothaya); kind of dumb since they're not worth as much as piranhas, sharks, octopus, snappers, tunas all of which i've gotten many times.

always using regular rod:

tuna = fresh fish

snapper = nipper

sharks/octopus = meat (might not be optimal bait for octopus but since they're worth the same and from the same location, no difference to me)

piranha = meat (lots of lost bait though on these maps)

i'm wondering if decayed nail is an optimal bait for anything; there's no "undead" type fish though.

Octopus - Comodo/Regular/Meat

yeah it doesn't look like the guide has been updated in a while.  kind of interesting that comodo yields two types of rare fish, although they are both worth the same amount of points.  have you hooked a squid (not giant) or jumbo shrimp?  those are the only ones i haven't managed to snag.

Megalodon is the only one i can think of.

yeah, but you can't fish those up :(

Some of my fishing data:

~i never caught any kraken tentacles

~i used regular fishing rod more than 90% of the time

~failure rate is about how often i didn't catch anything

Alberta

Rare Fish: Sturgeon (10 points)

Failure Rate: approx. 45%

Successful Catches: 62

Novice Slippers: 22

Fresh Fish: 26

Sealed Envelope: 5

Sturgeon: 9

Best Bait: Tentacle 22% Catch Rate(8 Sturgeon/37 Catches)

Ayothoya

Rare Fish: King Shrimp (7 points)

Failure Rate: approx. 30%

Successful Catches: 57

Novice Slippers: 27

Fresh Fish: 22

Sealed Envelope: 7

King Shrimp: 1

Best Bait: Not Sure

Ilzude

Rare Fish: Tuna (10 points)

Failure Rate: approx. 25%

Successful Catches: 83

Novice Slippers: 36

Fresh Fish: 27

Sealed Envelope: 6

Tuna: 14

Best Bait: Fresh Fish 19% Catch Rate(11 Tuna/57 Catches)

Prontera

Rare Fish: Salmon (5 points)

Failure Rate: approx. 15%

Successful Catches: 72

Novice Slippers: 36

Fresh Fish: 28

Sealed Envelope: 6

Salmon: 2

Best Bait: Not Sure

Comodo

Rare Fish: Shark (10 points), Octopus (10 points)

Failure Rate: approx. 30%

Successful Catches: 82

Novice Slippers: 22

Fresh Fish: 33

Sealed Envelope: 5

Shark: 16

Octopus: 6

Best Bait: Meat 38% Catch Rate(16 Shark+Octopus/42 Catches)

Byalan

Rare Fish: Squid (3 points)

Failure Rate: approx. 45%

Successful Catches: 55

Novice Slippers: 17

Fresh Fish: 28

Sealed Envelope: 6

Squid: 4

Best Bait: Decayed Nail 20% Catch Rate(4 Squid/20 Catches)

Nifflheim

Rare Fish: Piranha (15 points)

Failure Rate: approx. 75%

Successful Catches: 26

Novice Slippers: 8

Fresh Fish: 9

Sealed Envelope: 7

Piranha: 2

Best Bait: Meat 50% Catch Rate(2 Piranha/4 Catches)

Hugel

Rare Fish: Snapper (10 points)

Failure Rate: approx. 15%

Successful Catches: 142

Novice Slippers: 50

Fresh Fish: 45

Sealed Envelope: 8

Snapper: 39

Best Bait: Shrimp 32% Catch Rate(38 Snapper/120 Catches)

Glast Heim

Rare Fish: Piranha (15 points)

Failure Rate: approx. 75%

Successful Catches: 24

Novice Slippers: 10

Fresh Fish: 11

Sealed Envelope: 2

Piranha: 1

Best Bait: Not Sure, probably Meat

Tips:

~i would stay clear of Nifflheim and Glast Heim, even though they have the highest rare fish piranha (15 points), the failure rate is way to high. i would go in alot of times and strikeout on all three spots, zero catches.

~best spots are definitely Hugel and Comodo, high success rates and uses cheap npc bought baits. After those two spots, Ilzude would be a distant third, cheap npc bought baits, but only an ok success rate.

~always make sure you use your sealed envelopes as they are worth 15 points.

~my current strategy is to warp between Hugel and Comodo, and use my sealed envelopes every half hour and sprinkle in Ilzude sometimes depending on envelope location. Helps if you have many alts to use between timers.

thanks for the post!  i will need to test out the decayed nails in byalan.  Do you recall what you might have used to get the king shrimp?  I have not been able to fish up either squid or king shrimp this event and I was fishing heavily for around 2 weeks.

By the time the event ends I will have over 2.5k blue whales, more than enough to purchase everything with currency to spare, so I find it amusing that I was unable to collect the rare fish in all the spots.  I found plenty of sealed envelopes in ayothaya and byalan which is actually a better deal than getting the rare fish themselves.

From the clues Campitor provided, earthworms/peelings are your best bet for Salmon.  (i.e. earthworm peeling, worm peeling, earthworm the dude.  Earthworm the dude is likely the highest % due to bait rarity)

You're a much more avid fisherman than I am so it's unlucky that you weren't able to snag the kraken tentacles.  I fished one up using meat and another time using squid ink so it's not a large enough sample size.

^i got my only king shrimp using a decayed nail bait, but my results were pretty low in general with that bait in ayothoya that i chalked up the catch to the 5% chance you get to catch with any fish using any bait.

Yea the salmon one, i used at least 10 of each worm/insect bait, peeling, skin, feeler(except earthworm dude). And got zero salmon. I only got salmon using meat, but since results were low, i also chalked that one up to the 5% chance to catch fish.

Actually all my data was from like 3-4 days of on and off fishing. I didnt spend too much time on it xD
but yea no kraken catch sucks >_<

that's so strange.  i caught plenty of salmon using earthworm/worm peelings.  i've tried using shrimp, meat, fresh fish, squid ink at ayothaya with no hits.  assuming the non-meat bait is unique to specific areas, it looks like clam flesh/nipper may be the best bet for ayothaya, and jellopies are just the default bait that won't get you good results anywhere you go.

squid: decayed nail

giant squid: squid ink?? per fuyukkikun he's had the most success with this; i've only caught this twice using squid ink and meat

sturgeon: tentacle

sharktopus: meat

piranha: meat

tuna: fresh fish

salmon: peelings/feelers/earthworms

snapper: shrimp (i caught mine using nippers but it wasn't as common as some of the known bait/fish combos so i suspect nipper may not increase the % much, if at all)

king shrimp: nipper/clam flesh??

squid ink is sure the best bait to get kraken tentacle. i caught so many already. i even often caught 2 in a row. such an easy 30 points.

^run an account with many alts.
I have one account that i plan on going from scratch tonite.
Imma go 9 alts minimum(i have up to 27 alts total, server merger for the win lol), every 30 mins.
I will only hit hugel/comodo.
Then hit the sealed envelope.
Luckily i have a nice stash of built up envelopes from last year pirate quest to start out with.
This should net me on average 30 pts per alt.
9 alts multiplied by 30 pts is 270 pts, every half hour
so i figure i should be done in about 2-3 hours for a full set.

I will post my results tonight after i finish.
