When I open the client launcher, I click "play," then get this error on the splash screen:

cannot find file:
¾Æ·¡ÀÇ ÆÄÀÏ°ú ÅؽºÆ®³»¿ëÀ» ÇÔ²²\r\n¶ó
±×³ª·ÎÅ© °ø½ÄȨÆäÀÌÁö -> °í°´¼¾ÅÍ -> ¹®ÀÇÇÏ
±â¸¦\r\nÀÌ¿ëÇÏ¿© º¸³»Áֽñ⠹ٶø´Ï´Ù.

Everything is patched & up-to-date. I also tried an uninstall/reinstall.

Tech support just told me to repeat the aforementioned and then ignored my followup e-mails.

It would appear that my data.grf is missing three sprite files, but I'm unsure why or how to get them. I'd stick some junk in there manually to bypass the error, but I haven't looked at .grf extraction software in years, so I'm not sure what I should be using or where to get it from.

11/13/2014 update:

For future reference, this ended up being an issue (for me at least) with Linux and not the client as I originally thought. Switching from Wine version 1.7.XX to 1.6 did the trick for me.

Your game is not patching correctly. Possibly not at all. When you run the game after installing, did it sit there patching tons of stuff for a while? If not, it's not picking up *any* patches, and you'll have continual problems (every time there's an update, which is almost every week) until this is solved, even if you did get a clean RO folder.

@DrAzzy

Yes, it patched a good 10 to 15 minutes. It does patch frequently, but not every time I open the launcher; weekly, as you said, seems about right. The progress bar always ends with the "patch process completed" message. I think if the files were not being saved, it would try to update the same files each time, which is not the case. Is there maybe a third party I can trust to get the latest client data file that I can manually copy & paste into the game folder?

11/01/2014 update #1:

I was able to resolve this issue by installing RO via Steam, copying the client data from the Steam folder and pasting it into the original Ragnarok Online folder. However, now I get the same error sporatically when a character moves between maps:

¾Æ·¡ÀÇ ÆÄÀÏ°ú ÅؽºÆ®³»¿ëÀ» ÇÔ²²\r\n¶ó±×³ª·ÎÅ© °ø½ÄȨÆäÀÌÁö -> °í°´¼¾ÅÍ -> ¹®ÀÇÇϱ⸦\r\nÀÌ¿ëÇÏ¿© º¸³»Áֽñ⠹ٶø´Ï´Ù.

build date: Oct 15 2014

I've noticed the date generated is 16 days off--don't know if that's relevant....

11/01/2014 update #2:

Alright, this message was generated by my debugger:

fixme:dbghelp:elf_search_auxv can't find symbol in module

Something is missing from from the dbghelp file? Wish I could decipher more than that bit....

*bump*

Here's the same BS generic response I got from Warpportal's IT department again:

Why didn't you mention that you were running the client under Wine? <_<

Do you have the Visual C++ 2008 Run-Time Library installed in your Wine bottle? Wine's implementation of the Visual C++ 2008 Run-Time Library contains a ghastly bug that causes the RO client updater to silently corrupt the client's resource files when it installs updates. I'm almost certain that this is the cause of your problem.

I recommend that you create a new bottle and then reinstall the IRO client into it by following my guide for installing the RO client on Linux.

@Axylus

Sorry, I didn't think it was relevant as I've seen the same error on a Win 8.1 system running compatibility mode. Because of this, I was working under the theory that this was a client issue; and, as Warpportal doesn't support Linux, I figured the added detail would only add to the confusion.

It's been a while, but I'm fairly sure I didn't install Visual C++ 2008 Run-Time Library. You're guide looks more or less like the install process I went through; exception being that I utilized the PlayOnLinux front-end rather than going through the terminal.

Play on Linux's installation script for the RO client hasn't been updated since 2009 and doesn't install any version of the Visual C++ Run-Time Library. -_-

You should always use a current guide or installation profile/script to install the RO client because both Wine and the client change frequently. As far as I'm aware, my guides and the CrossTie profile that I contribute to are the only resources for installing the RO client under Wine/CrossOver that are regularly updated and therefore won't cause you to encounter any serious problems. :)

@Axylus

I didn't use the PlayOnLinux installation script--I generally install everything as a "non-listed program". I'm fairly certain that I just ran MS core fonts & vcrun2008. However, I've previously been running wine 1.7 (or later); I switched to wine 1.6, as you have in your guide, and it seems to have corrected the issue. Still not sure what Win 8.1 is doing--its less of a concern though. Thank you for your time.

I downloaded the new client, and I made sure that vcrun2008 is already installed in my computer. I'm running on Wine 1.6.2 and still having this problem. Any suggestion?

I suspect that the latest update to the Renewal client has broken its compatibility with Wine 1.6. -_-

Try the following:
  • Open Terminal.
  • Enter "sudo apt-get install wine1.7" to upgrade to Wine 1.7.
  • Enter "mv -v "$HOME/.wine" "$HOME/.wine.$(date +%s)"" (excluding the outermost pair of quotation marks).
  • If you are using a 64-bit version of Linux, then enter "WINEARCH=win32 wineboot". (If you don't know the bit count of your Linux installation, then you can determine it by entering "getconf LONG_BIT" in Terminal.)
  • Enter "winetricks vcrun2008".
  • Install the IRO client.
If the problem persists, then do the following:
  • Open Terminal.
  • Enter "winetricks vcrun2008 vcrun2010".
  • Install the IRO client.
Please report which procedure, if any, resolves the problem.

Edit : I can't reproduce the problem while running the IRO client under Wine 1.7.30 on Lubuntu 14.10 (x86-64).

My method from the top then, for posterity...

1. Run PlayOnLinux.
2. Click the "Install" button.
3. Bottom left corner, click "Install a non-listed program."
4. Next.
5. "Install a program in a new virtual drive," Next.
6. Name your new virtual drive, Next.
7. Check all three boxes, Next.
8. Pick Wine version 1.6 (will need to be installed if its not available here), Next.
9. Set Windows Version to "Windows 7", OK.
10. Select "POL_Install_corefonts"  & "POL_Install_vcrun2008," Next.
11. Click "Cancel" when you're prompted to browse for the client installer.
12. Manually copy the Gravity folder from a friend's computer and paste it in the appropriate directory (drive_c) in your virtual drive.

Its dumb and round-about, but it worked for me.

FYI, still using Wine 1.6 and no issues so far.

It's best to set your bottle's Windows version to "Windows XP" (which is the default) because Wine has the greatest compatibility with Windows XP's APIs. Additionally, the RO client still functions better on Windows XP than it does on later versions of Windows.

Was your bottle's Windows version set to "Windows XP" when the problem was manifesting itself?

The fact that the problem doesn't occur when using a copy of someone else's client installation suggests that the cause of the problem was the updater corrupting the client's resource files, as I suspected; however, I'm puzzled as to why that would occur if the VC++2008RTL was installed in your bottle. I'd be interested to know whether the problem recurs when you next update the client.

Yes, Win XP version was going while the issue persisted. I changed it to various versions to see if it made a difference. In the end, it wound up on Win 7 for no particular reason. I'll probably try your recommendation and switch it back.

The client wasn't up-to-date when the Gravity folder was copied, so it did patch a good while and played with no issues.

Alright. I simply updated my Wine to 1.7 and re-installed the client, patched, and ran in under Windows XP compatibility mode. It's working now. Just vcrun2008 installed. No vcrun2010 needed.
