I normally favor nukers, ranged characters, and support types... which have been rendered useless, weak, and useless respectively. I normally prefer party play (actual parties, not leeching or camping staircases), but Renewal has turned partying from undesirable to just plain punitive. I tend to prefer more complex characters - one skill wonders and autoattackers simply aren't fun to play. Most of the main Renewal characters seem to be stupidly simple though - spam the same AoE melee attack endlessly until you glow blue.

Pretty much all of my characters are unplayable until the feedback forum hopefully results in some fixes, but I have a free slot from purging my linker out (based on current kRO plans and how far behind iRO is, linkers get their 3rd job in the 2nd half of 2012, and he'd be frozen at 99 until then). I can also free a 2nd slot, as my 9th character is a joke novice that exists purely to give my Wings of Victory a silly name.

Can anyone suggest a meleer that's reasonably complex? Not mado - I know they suck... although that was what I was originally going to aim for. I was thinking of trying a combo monk, but I'm not sure how those fare in Renewal. Shadow chaser looks like it has enough to it that it might be interesting as well. I can't think of much else that isn't either a 1 skill wonder, or just plain trash, but I'm open to any ideas you can think of. Alternatively, suggestions of an MMO that doesn't play like WoW, has actually interesting characters and the ability to design builds, doesn't require you to melee, and doesn't have a horrifically broken cash shop would also work.

Only ones I can think of are Monk (PVM) and Taekwon Master. I hear combo Monks aren't that much better in Renewal, but it has that reasonable complexity you're looking for. Dagger Ninja might be interesting. (Thinking of rolling one myself.)

As for the second suggestion, GOOD LUCK with that. I have yet to find another MMO that has stat customization like RO.

Combo Monks aren't terribly complex, but they're not the most boring either... Agi > Dex > Str, press <x> -> <y> when <z> skill procs. They are fun though, and you can either just Ctrl+Click with Raging Trifecta, or master your combo timing. The stream of numbers that come is rather calming, as put by a dagger stalker friend who partied with my monk.

Which is another point, they're good with all melee parties. They can buff and heal, and if there's a stationary, or non-cast sensitive monster, you have a perma supply of SP via Spiritual Sphere Absorption. They won't replace a full time healer, but if you aren't losing HP rapidly, then it's all good. SP will run out rapidly without being able to steal some monster's SP.

Combo monks in renewal are better (in my opinion) than in pre-renewal, with them being easier to level.

I'm not sure about how Shadow Chasers are, but Rogues are fun as well. Alchies have some versatility with them, they can be either battle or support, plus they get an almost-free pet. Smiths are generally battle, sins are general Ctrl-Click... Saders can be Agi/Crit or Grand Cross, Knights can be Bowling Bash or Brandish Sphere or all agi or all vit, Wizards are wizards, Sages can hindsight or cast (I haven't had luck with Hindsight though), Archer branches will DS the entire way through with either agi or no agi.... And I think that's a run on sentence of all of them, besides Priests who can either battle, ME, or full support. (Which completes the list.)

Sorry if I forgot a well-known build, I don't play every char.

Ok, sounds like combo monks are decently viable, I'll give them a shot, followed by either SC or Alcy.

I'm avoiding expanded classes because their exp freezes at 99, in a 150 level game. I know new classes are coming for them, but they're 2 updates away in kRO (so figure 6 months), and iRO is more than a year behind (so figure 6 + 15 months). I'm expecting them in spring or summer of 2012.

Try Battle Priest yet, I just resurrected mine and it's SOOOOO much fun to play now that str isn't a major requirement so you can make a balanced stat Battle Priest that totally kicks ass.
