MY ORIGINAL PROBLEM:

Hey guys, I just got myself a new PC (with better gfx card) and when I tried RO on it, the sprites started looking weird (look at that emoticon, and the outlines look weird too).

screen_Chaos640.jpg

When I was playing on my laptop (which had a lesser-tier gfx card), RO looked better.

screen_Chaos434.jpg

Any thoughts or any settings I should know about? It looks like this whether I play 1280x720 or 1920x1080. <_< I'm wondering if this is just because of my PC or is it an effect of a client update for the past weeks (I haven't been playing much for a while).

-- EDIT --

SOLUTION:

Hey guys! I fixed it! Well, it's not really a fully permanent fix, but it works! First things first -- you have to enable User Account Control (UAC) for this to work!

NOTE: This does not work on full screen RO!

So right now, I'm on a PC that's using MSI GTX 970. It's too good for RO, which is probably why it's causing the sprite issues.

screenChaos645_zps5a66e286.jpg

While RO is running, we'll need to trigger the UAC to pop-up. To do this, right click any file on your PC and select "Run as administrator," but you don't actually have to run it.

win8-uac.png

Once the UAC pops out, just click "No" to cancel it. If you have another window open on the foreground and the windowed RO is open in the background, you should see that it somehow hung up -- but it didn't really hang up. Click on that RO window and everything will be moving again, and to top it all off... the sprite issue has been fixed!

This might sound silly, but the top screenshot look just they way things look on my computer when I set the sprite detail to Medium in Setup.exe. Have you checked whether it's set to High on your new computer?

I'm pretty sure it's set to High... and yea, exactly -- it looks like as if the sprite details is Medium or Low. :( I'll try to set it to Medium and back to High to see if that works.

EDIT:

LOW:

screenChaos642_zps70a8cd69.jpg

MEDIUM:

screenChaos641_zpsfd79a60a.jpg

HIGH:

screenChaos643_zpsa13318e9.jpg

Going back and forth betwen Sprite quality settings doesn't seem to fix it. The sprite outlines still look messed up and the emoticons look weird too.

Just for comparison, this screenshot's from my laptop:

As you can see, it looks fine just like everyone else's. :sob:

Maybe this?

Or you should try to turn off anisotropic filtering in the control panel of your card...

I tried Trilinear but it looked the same, with the addition of the character select sprites getting messed up. Explicitly turning off Anisotropic Filtering on the control panel didn't do anything too (default was Application-controlled). :( I'll play around with the settings more and see what'll fix it.

Oh hey, check this out:

http://www.reddit.co...hics_are_weird/

So I tried switching to the Intel HD 4600 graphics, and it does look okay!

However, everything is very slow with this setting. :(

I get that kind of effect when I turn Anti-Aliasing on. Have you tried turning it off? (If you're an Nvidia user, it should give you an option to set it to off for RO only and not for your other games. IDK about other cards.)

One of my guild mates had a problem when he got a  new graphic card. we did everything to try to fix it. but what we figured out that RO was so old it couldn't talk to the graphic card right

like a grandma's kid trying to explain what an Ipod does

Ro being Grandma and the new graphic card being grandkid.

Great, great, grandchild.

Also, have you tried running in windowed mode? When I got my laptop a few months ago, I would get really laggy and had a bunch of broken sprites when running in fullscreen because of my newer card (and partly because of the resolution I was running it in). Running in windowed mode solved most of my graphical problems (and I found a workaround by editing the window dimensions in to make it more or less appear like I'm playing fullscreen as well anyway)

Spoiler

I believe that your settings is set to DirectHal. Have you actually tried changing that to NVIDIA?

Have you tried turning compatibility to Win XP SP2 for the setup, .exe and patcher?
I had numerous graphics issues and that fixed mine?

Guys, I've solved the problem (somehow)! I'll be editing the first post so that this topic can serve as a guide to the whole world (as I've been seeing unresolved topics on Google).

And no, turning off anti-aliasing, switching compatibility modes and changing DirectHAL to NVidia didn't resolve my problem.

And yes, I always play in windowed mode. Somehow, full screen lags too much on this new PC (probably due to dual monitor? But that's impossible... I'm using a GTX 970 ffs).

That is a darn weird fix though.  :wah:  I don't get how it works at all. And it's a shame it doesn't work on full screen.

Or, you could just press Ctrl+alt+del. That forces graphics drivers to reload and outlining gets fixed:) and it also works full screen

Please read the resolution on the OP. Instructions are there. Sorry, I can't explain why it works like that. If anyone can, please do.

I just upgraded my computer and I'm having this exact same issue. Launching the UAC fixes the issue, but I don't really want to do that each and every time. Is there a better way?

crtl-alt-del then hit cancel is the quickest way. But other then that no.

Hate to beat a dead horse here but I'm now having this exact same issue after upgrading from a GTX 650 TI to a GTX 750 TI.

It would be nice to get some official word on this or at least some explanation as to why this is happening, if there's a proper fix for it besides force-reloading our graphics drivers via ctrl+alt+del or if it can be even be fixed at all for that matter.

This issue should be relayed over to kRO and/or nVidia themselves directly from iRO staff if anything is to ever actually be done about it.

Force-reloading the GPU driver via ctrl+alt+del isn't even a complete fix as it can sometimes cause the following problems to happen:

- significantly slow the rate of loading screens

- make lines, black splotches and other graphical distortions to appear across the screen in various locations

- make GUI elements display improperly or completely disappear all together such as causing the cell-selection cursor to appear completely solid or not appear at all

- and in some cases cause RO to crash entirely

I stopped streaming RO for this reason - it's not worth it to me to revert back to my 650 TI and take the performance hit on other games just so I can play/stream RO without issues.

As of this moment an official fix has not been released, though I requested a follow up regarding the issue just a few minutes ago.

Today's maintenance client update seems to have fixed my RO graphical issues related to Nvidia's Maxwell cards; a GTX 980. :)

I can finally multi client without having half my clients crashing on me~ really happy that it finally got fixed after waiting for so long. Hurray! ^^
