Coolsam - cheers, i'll look into guilds too. I think i'll try to work out how to join a party in-game first though...o_0

Cheers for the warm welcome guys. Yeah i'm used to the flaming you can get on some gaming forums (usually involving the words "uber" and "n00b" in close proximity to one another). I guess what i'm trying to find at the moment is some structure - i can find a few quests and things, and understand the quest system i think, but other than that i'm struggling to see a basic storyline panning out. I guess i know very little about this game as a MMORPG at the moment, lots left to learn. Props to the creators though, i love the graphics, and the interface seems very simple to use.

Story line? Alright story time
So one day 5 bros killed this dragon that was evil. Most of them don't have names but they have standard issued names, they were
A white boy named Warrior
A white girl named Mage
A tan girl named Archer
A white boy named Thief
A sIut named Paris
So after they killed/imprisoned Elga, a dark dragon, Elga gave a proposition to Paris that pretty much was
You're a human, you're going to grow old and not be able to wear that skimpy lingerie that she never takes off
Paris knew she was doomed to grow frail old and have a lack of sex appeal, so she takes up the dragon on a deal
Free me and i will make you immortal.
This would please any little sIut and so Paris accepted
~500 or something years later~
The threat of Elga is back as Paris (Lingerie and all) attempts to finally revive Elga, while you, YES YOU, have to stop her plans through following a string of Hero Missions throughout 2 continents until you are high enough level and kill Paris. You kill some wolves along the way, a sheep or two, crocodiles, golems, poop inspired monsters, shotgun wielding sharks, armored reindeer, and snow white's seven dwarfs (actually more like hundreds of them).
The End
Until chapter 3 with the third continent of ice

Oh. You. You wonderful man. Your way with storytelling is absolutely divine.
At any rate, here's some lovely tips for you since you only got an hour in so far!
Get your 2nd job within 24 hours of creating the character to receive an exclusive medal: Grind Master
Don't die before your 2nd job (no time limit) and receive an exclusive medal: Godlike Control
Both are helpful early on. But you can live without medals.

Pick up yellow quests as well early on since you will be strapped for cash. In due time leveling becomes its own profit. As long as you score highly on MM you will always get a red sack at the reward screen, at Arka i get about 1 gold 70 silver per sack).
Eventually stop picking up yellow quests if you are going to be going out of your way to complete them. If you need to do a MM for a couple levels, might as well pick up the yellow quests that are in the general area of which you will be training in.
Start doing dailies in your free time, guild dailies give a decent amount of EXP and help out your guild, while Hunter G Dailies give EXP proportionate to your level as well as these things called Capsules that can contain armor/weapon or a Skill Forge which gives you 1 SP. Skill forges are not trade able, but the capsules are.
Whenever you can, participate in battle square every day at 8pm pacific, it breaks the mundane need of leveling while offering nice rewards. These rewards (if your team winds) are 1 of 2 paths you take for 4th job.
If you hate PvP, start doing achievements early (The ones that are simple and doable at your level) since you need 70k A{ (Achievement points to job advance if you don't do battlesquare)
Lets say you're rich and you don't want to waste your time, buy all of the emblems from BS (battle square) off people in Market, i think they go for 300 gold each
If you want to join a pro guild, you are going to need to level up and reach a certain threshold before people will take you seriously.
Join a friendly guild at the moment with people in a similar situation as yourself, get to know people, etc.
Make friends, this game sucks playing alone. Once you have a solid group of friends you can have a solid partying group.
Log out in Port of Winds, the rest EXP helps.
Take advantage of wanted quests that offer monster cards. Although boring, they pay off.
Don't be afraid to post on the forums, no question is stupid (unless the answer is stickied in front of your face/you didn't attempt the search function). People usually respond quick on these forums.
Things off the top of my head~

Moles, ghosts, the undead, orges, fat guys, fireflies, beetles, caterpillars, frogs, moths, ents, mad beavers with power tools, centaurs, tribesmen, an owl, gorillas, evil plants, bejewelled golems, sIutty fairies, ghouls, gargoyles, rats, possesed suits of armor, vampires, werewolves, lava dragon, mad scientist, undead dragoon, robots, dragon-like brutes, and giant scorpions.
You missed some.
