Update Log

Spoiler

Welcome! My name is Undying and I will be walking us through a journey of how to build a character for WoE. I will cover all the major classes and all the major class roles during GvGs, precasting, and breaking precasts. This is a basic guide and is made to show you end game goals. However, nothing is set in stone. A smart player is much more valuable and impactful then a character with perfect gears or perfect stats.

Important Disclaimer: This will not be "the best build possible" type of guide. This is to welcome players WoE and provide some basic information on what to do during WoE. If you disagree with builds or role advice, PM me and do not spam the thread. Thread is here to answer questions and provide basic knowledge, not listen to opinions. If you feel passionate and want to provide your knowledge on a Class, PM me and we will work something out :) Or if you are good at proof reading/grammar let me know because I need a lot of help!

IV. WoE 101 for beginners: How to survive?

Key survival stats to consider (short version)

-Max HP

-Racial and elemental reduction

-Healing items

-Positioning

-New player specifically tips

In WoE there will be other guilds that will try to drop your character's HP to zero. There are a few ways to try and prevent this from happening.

-Having a high max HP. This doesn't necessarily mean to have 20,000 or more max hp. What this means is, your true "max hp" is whatever your current HP is. So if you normally have 10k hp and take damage for 5k, your new hp will be at 5k. In order to make the most of your max hp, you will need to heal up as soon as possible. There will be a variety of sources dealing damage through out WoE, so never be afraid of using too many hp recovery items. If you do not heal up back to your absolute max hp, then you are playing at a disadvantage. If you need help potting, try "pulling" for parties in dragons or similar type of things. Side note: Song of Lutie is a very important skill that can boost everyone's max hp for 20 seconds. This is an amazing skill, however it is important to heal up to that new max hp asap to take advantage of it!

-Racial and elemental reductions will save your butt! Some of the very pure damage dealing classes (anything with stun immunity via gears) will not be able to take advantage of stacking as many reductions. However, other classes (anything with stun immunity via stats) can take a big advantage of this. Depending on the situation you will want as much as possible, but if your newer please try to stack up reductions until you feel more comfortable. A cranial valk shield is a very good defensive choice for a shield since it reduces demihuman damage by 30% but also reduces some elements by 20%. Feather berets are also great since you will get a small amount of mdef and 10% less from demihuman. Combat knife is usable by some classes and long mace for others, for some additional reduction. Raydric carded garments are great for general purpose gear in WoE as it will reduce the main damage dealing skills like acid bomb and guillotine fist.

-Healing items are a key to survival. Using them fast enough, with good recovery rates, will allow your character to take consistent damage and not die. Healing items will literally save your life, but you must use them. I am very biased since I main a paladin (FS) for many years. In order for me to survive and keep the 3 other players I am sac'ing alive I must spam a lot of healing items. I have no remorse for "over using" healing items as it is key to survival for myself and guild mates. Do not be afraid to use your healing items, they are there for a reason. Using the right healing items is important as well. Ranked white slims should be the target goal for WoE, everything else doesn't compare. Healing items, when used, will protect you from consistent damage that is less then your max hp. However, some skills or combination of skills are designed to one shot (100%-0%) your hp...

-Having proper positioning with your guild is important to your survival and theirs as well. There are some skills and combinations of skills that are designed to one shot your hp. The most obvious example is gfist and sonic blow. Most of the very high damage skills require melee range. If you are off by your self then it is easy for a champ to pick you off and gfist you. If your tightly packed in with your guild (strength in numbers) then it is much harder for the champ to get you and having more people to attack the champ might mean he dies before he can fist. Standing on top of a ME with your guild in a proper spot, which is dependent on your roll, can turn your guild into an unstoppable force. Think of it as a "Spartan" unit, it is just indestructible when your tightly packed and everyone is in the proper position. When everybody is running around going crazy it is very easy for enemies to pick you off one by one.

-For new players looking at enjoying WoE. I would highly recommended having the following gear (provided your not a hw or bio), a cranial valk shield, feather beret, unfrozen armor, and a raydric carded garment. Most classes can benefit from BG sets, so those might be (free) obtainable goals to help you out. When your actively participating in WoE, be very mindful of where you are standing and how much hp you currently have. Make sure you put your potions on an easy to use hotkey so that you can use them as much as they are needed. Try to stay with your guild and stand behind somebody else. Follow directions and do your best!!!! It should be a lot of fun :)

All builds will be 99/70 and including +10 foods (in appropriate stats), aspd potions, mega resist potions, mental potions, blessing, agi up, ect ect. Gods, MVPs, and mini boss cards will not be included. None of this is set in stone, this is simply to stimulate the mind or give some goals to shoot for.

VII. How to build a roster

Roster basics, the bare minimum.

Regardless of a guild's size it is important to cover the bare minimum to be as effective as possible. Every guild needs the following:

-Scholar (DLP)

-Minstrel

-Paladin

-Recaller

Once those positions are filled it is time to decide what to add to the roster. You can add additional support characters to strengthen your guilds defense and buffs. You can add damage dealing characters to increase your killing ability. You can also add debuffers/disablers to limit the enemies damage output.

Examples of damage dealing classes with minimum class support requirements.

-DD Biochemist. Strong and consistent single target ranged damage. Requires a minstrel and paladin in order to be of basic efficiency.

-High Wizard. Strong, elemental, and AoE magic damage. Requires a minstrel, paladin, and soul linker in order to be of basic efficiency.

-Champion. Strong single target damage.

-Lord Knight. Moderate, elemental, and AoE damage. Requires multiple Lord Knights and an offensive guild to back them up in order to be of basic efficiency. AKA best if you have a surplus of players.

-DD Stalker. Moderate, elemental, and AoE/single magic damage. Requires a minstrel, paladin, soul linker, and MBK scholar in order to be of basic efficiency.

-FAS Sniper. Moderate, elemental, and AoE ranged physical damage. Requires a minstrel in order to be of basic efficiency.

-TC Gypsy. Random effects and damage that ignores sac and GTB. Requires a minstrel in order to be of basic efficiency.

Examples of support characters with benefits of having them.

-Paladin. Allows your damage dealing classes and main support classes to stay alive longer then they normally would.

-Minstrel. Allows your guild to cast skills more rapidly.

-Scholar. Allows your guild to survive AoE magic damage.

-High Priest. Allows your guild to receive buffs and status recovery.

-Soul Linker. Allows your guild to have required buffs and can protect the frontline.

-SPP Bio. Allows your guild to have AoE hp recovery.

Examples of debuffers/disablers with benefits of having them

-Scholar. The definition of debuffer and disabler.

-SG Gypsy. Can drastically slow down the spam rate of the enemy guild.

-Sniper. Status effects of mute or chaos can reduce DPS and movement of enemy guilds.

-FJ Minstrel. Spamming frost joke will hinder GR/Bryn users useless and easy to kill.

So when creating your own roster, big or little, it is important to have a balance between having enough support and enough damage. I would recommend taking care of the support that is needed before taking care of the damage part of the roster. It is also very important to have multiple types of damage. If you only run with forced neutral damage dealers (bios and champs), then you will be at a loss if the enemy has good gear and can out pot your damage. It is good to have a blend of forced neutral ranged (bios), with some heavy forced neutral melee (champs), some AoE elemental magic (HW), and possibly elemental physical damage (LK). By offering as many different types of damage it is hard to "counter" it by just gears alone.

VIII. Basics of teamwork

How do 5 to 50+ players come together and become a solid force to be reckoned with? Teamwork. Teamwork is what makes Classic, also pre-renewal mechanics, what it is. Every success or failure in WoE has been directly effected by teamwork. Every class has a "counter" and every class requires other classes support to be used efficiently. How do we bring teamwork together?

Key points for Teamwork!

Have a way to communicate

-In game chat is only reliable to a certain degree. Ragnarok can be very fast paced at times and the emp could break before you type out "sinx on emp". It isn't required to WoE but voice communication software is very efficient. There are many obvious ways as to how this is a great thing. It allows communication without stopping in game and typing it out. It's also very fun to talk and socialize.

Have designated roles/communication between roles

-As far as "key" roles I think there are three. You have a leader, a recaller, and movement (DLP scholar + main Minstrel). It is possible to have a single person do two roles.

The leader role is generally the guild leader or one of the guild leaders. This role can also be described as a "shot caller". They will make a decision on where to go, what to do, who to attack and much more. This person will generally be in charge of knowing the end game goals that the guild is shooting for and will provide instruction to achieve them. For WoE, this will be the most vocal person who will be describing where they want the guild and what to do.

The recaller role is for the player on the recaller. Recall is a very powerful guild skill that is game changing. It is vital that this player can follow the instructions of the leader perfectly and also must be able to communicate. The recaller has one main job at the end of the day... to recall. If that player needs sacrifice, safety wall, or a specific position for support then they must be able to communicate that to the guild so they can receive the support that is needed.

Movement roles could also be described as the shepard role of trying to herd the sheep. The DLP Scholar and main Minstrel should be pretty well on point with the leader. I include both of these because both are vital and both put out big easy to follow AoE ground spells to see. As a member of a guild/team it is much easier to follow a giant 11x11 thing on the ground then listen to "regroup on the stairs". These characters are necessary for almost any guild and they are easy to spot and regroup with. When engaging in a fight it makes for easy following, simply stay in strings and on ME. The actual players of the DLP Scholar and main Minstrel have to be amazing at following directions from the leader. They should also be able to communicate with the leader and guild.

A "carry" or DPS oriented class is only as good as the support that they are given. The support classes are often less glamorous, however they are the reason why your guild wins. Always always thank your support players. There wouldn't be any carry or dps classes without supports.

Minstrel build was updated if you haven't noticed yet. As for your small guild composition I'll suggest a USRC-like team with a Linker or a Biochem in stead of a Stalker so...

Minstrel(support), Scholar(support), Paladin(support), High Priest(support), High Wizard(DD), Champion(DD), Bomber(DD)/Linker(Support).

Linker:

pros: increased mobility, saves the High Wizard from Kaite reflect

cons: needs another Linker to be effective with Ka buffs

Bomber:

pros: increase your dps

cons: you'll be missing linker buffs

To add to what darkabe said, team composition also depend on your objective. If you wish to break castles, then you will require a breaker character. Sinx/tkm is top tier followed by things like LK/Mastersmiths ect. Also, I wouldn't underestimate the power of a well positioned sniper to break it. If the objective is just to have fun, then I would just be sure to include the very bare minimum and have people play what they want. If the objective is just to fight and have action then the USRC setup like darkabe described would be great (i would 100% run bio and dual log linker). If action is the goal you can open up and experience different "unusual" comps as well. We ran 4 LKs, 1 champ (recaller), and tkm before and it was a very fun WoE. That goes against everything said in this thread, but it worked for the objective that we had. There is something to be said for experienced players on "comfort" picks even if it doesn't make the best "on paper roster"....

Easier to help you build a solid roster for a small group if we know the goal/objective. The only problem with small group play is there will always be something lacking in the comp or some weakness to expose if people pick up on it.
