Born on this day in 1954, Mr. Otomo is best known for the groundbreaking graphic novel and anime Akira. A project of epic scale, the manga series spanned eight years. He wrote and directed Akira, Steamboy and wrote the screenplays for Roujin Z, and Metropolis. Though not as prolific as Hayao Miyazaki or Osamu Tezuka, his shadow looms large over anime's history.
Though I recognize these films as visual masterpieces, the often dark tone and depressing endings of these films leave me a little cold despite loving the genres. Still, that guy can direct hell of an action sequence.
Also, the Streamline dub of Akira, with it's Dragon Ball Z style voice overs was FAR superior.
