when i open the client i get the error failed to connect to file server anyone have any ideas as how i can fix this?

Check that IE is able to connect to the RO website (if it can't, figure out why not and fix it), and that you don't have any firewall software (including windows firewall) blocking the patch client. By default, most firewall software will block everything, and windows firewall will not always notify you when it blocks a new program, even if you have it set to do so.
