I played RO years ago (before renewal and transcendent classes), but I'm starting a brand new character on Chaos now. I won't have access to any extra money or gear in the beginning, and I'm wondering what class to play. The classes I'm considering right now are Ranger, Katar Guillotine Cross, and Warlock. Specifically I'm looking for:
  • Focused on MVP and PVM. I have no interest in PVP or WOE.
  • I don't know anyone ingame, so I'm probably going to be mostly solo.
  • I don't want to use pets.
  • I'm not that interested in the expanded classes.
How dependent are Hunters/Rangers on falcon/warg pets? Can I make a build without them, or are they basically essential?

Can I level up as a Katar Assassin/Guillotine Cross solo as a new character, or do you need a lot of money for gear right at the start to make it work?

What about Wizard/Warlock? Are they viable solo for a new player? I see a lot of threads saying that they're terrible in late game. Is that accurate?

I would go with Ranger just because they can do relatively high damage right off the bat with arrow storm. Rangers can MVP well if you have ASPD, I think they can hitlock an MVP?

If you plan to go ASPD Ranger then a Warg is essential imo. Otherwise if you are just AS build you don't really need it.

I have a Katar GX and if it pretty easy to solo with hunter fly cards in the katar (hunter fly cards help with not using much pots) you can just spam rolling cutter.

Warlocks tend to be on the squishy side but don't let that discourage you. You can play them with the right gear and if you master the reading spell book and release skills.

Hope that helps!

1. Warg/falcon are not really a pet, since you dont need to feed them. They just follow you around when you summon them. But to use some skill, they will need to be there.

2.Gx will require you to have a solid amount of zeny for it to work properly. Gear that you need right off from the start as gx: Leeching Headgear (either vana or rwh) and a good katar. Your only problem is the leeching headgear, as the best katar for pvm can be obtained for free from an instance called ghost palace.

3.I dont really play caster class, so i dont know that much about wl. But i think they will need more zeny that gx to be able to dish out decent damage or to survive. And their option to solo thing is quite limited compare to ranger and gx.

My advice when someone ask for a class to play with is;
"If you willing to spend some REAL LIFE MONEY early on, go with GX. Otherwise, go with RANGER." (only applied if you want an ez starting time in RO)

btw, this kind of question had already been asked before. Try to look around a lil`bit. You will find many thread about this topic here.

rangers require the least investment so they're the easiest option for new players. gxes do require a fair bit of money to get started, but once you do they're probably the most self sustaining and efficient class (only consumable you'll really need are poison bottles).

compared to those two a warlock will have quite a bit more trouble soloing, but they're heaps of fun to play imo. their damage does kind of fall off in later levels unless you have high end gear though, so most endgame warlocks play support.
