I've been putting off making a genetic for a very long time specifically because it seemed like it's a lot of trouble making a perfectly good homunculus. Is this true or are they just pretty much easy to manage and level?
How annoying is it to raise a perfectly good homunculus?

The hardest part is getting loyal intimacy to evolve it to its 2nd form.
911 points is needed for that. Assuming that the homunculus is fed between 11-24 hunger (1 point is earned), it will take roughly 151.8 hours (6.32 days) of straight feedings. It'll definitely take longer than 6 days. Took me 3-4 months on my 1st homunculus.
However, Homunculus S classes, specifically Sera's Painkiller and Dieter's Pyroclastic buffs, are worth the trouble to do this. My suggestion: start a homunculus when your an alchemist ASAP.

i can't decide which is more painful
Double loyaling a Amistr or waiting for a Amistr base Sera to reach lvl116.

if you want the best homunculus (Amistr base Sera) it will take you a lot of time and frustration (4-6weeks for double loyal).
But if you just want Painkiller and willing to settle for 2nd best. A Vanil base Sera levels pretty fast and you need it reach loyal once. Will take about 2-3 weeks to reach loyal once.

Reading this makes me so glad I didn't decide to remake my Amistr to Vanil to level faster. I got him loyal already (long ago & then ignored leveling him for 6mo+) but heard there is issues when you evolve them to Sera involving their aspd. I really love Amistr's skills though.

There is no best, all are situational, all are due to preference.
People have a huge throbbing hard-on for Painkiller... Realize it's only a 1k reduc, when fighting an MvP most of them do enough damage with their skills that it'll only block a small part of their damage unless you have the proper elemental reducs (and a lot of them at that)
I've seen people use Ami-Dieter and had their Homu tank the MvP itself while they killed it.
Specifically KamiKali doing it to defeat Beelze >.>

Some people use Eira with Overboost to tank MVPs pretty effectively since homu flee doesn't get mob penalty. But Amistr is pretty much the best base Homu, though you may or may not even use Bulwark / Castling much at all.

Yeah Amistr skills compliment Homu S skills the best really.

Painkiller applies a flat reduction like soft def/mdef which means multi-hit monster skills are pretty much negated. It also makes sure that the boss slaves don't hurt.

If your homu can tank the monster, the monster will only can do 1 - 200 dmg on u ( PK+ DR HBP)
