I haven't played in many, many years and I'm definitely a noob. Me and my girlfriend (who has never played before) are looking to create a duo. She chose a mage, so I figured I needed a tank. But there's a good chance she may not even like the game, so I'd like to be able to solo as well. As far as monks go, what's a good choice to tank her mage and also be able to survive solo? I'm thinking a str / vit build? Perhaps a hybrid between vit and some agi?

My main question is this: what stats should we both get, and in what order? To start off, I had her invest in vit and a little bit of dex. I'm not sure what mages use before they start casting. Str and agi are useless for her, so I figured grab a few points in vit and dex initially. At any rate we're only like level 3 so no big deal if I screwed up. I put my initial points in agi mostly, but now I'm wishing I favored vit over agi.

Should I pump str and vit and neglect agi? What should she do? Vit and dex, then start pumping int? I hear  she doesn't need as much dex as I thought, as it barely reduces cast time. So she should be pumping int and just enough vit to survive? Or what?

Thanks for your help. I'm really hoping my girlfriend and I can connect over this game, as I have lots of great memories from pre-renewal 10 yrs ago.

Make a crusader or priest, the are more practical for duo assist and more versatile for non-tank roles.

She should go full tilt int.

For you,
Crusader: moderate str and lowish vit, dex, and int.
Priest: int/vit equally, then dex when int/vit become too expensive to be useful.

Pick crusader if you want to kill a bit while you tank.
Pick priest if you want to just make her better the whole time (you'd be self sacrificing your own glory to make her happier xP)

Chaos renewal.

The thing is, FS priest is just not my style. I want to be able to play solo a bit too, and I always wanted to try a monk. Is it impossible to create a tanking monk? I could do a crusader I guess, but I'd rather not. I have my heart set on a monk. If I need to sacrifice a little damage in favor of vit to tank, I'm ok with that.

Just play what you want.

I solo'ed with my Monk>Champion most of the time and I was a Combo build, but I managed to tank at TI parties well enough (at least no one said I sucked...)

Monks No. 1 Tanking skill is Mental Strenght, and you build more defense using reductions.

As a Monk, I suggest you go something like this by level 99/50 (Go VIT, STR, DEX)

STR  70

AGI  50

VIT  65

INT 40

DEX 60

LUK 1

with this you'll have 106 stat points left (Take this as a guide, play with it until you feel comfortable)

Once you turn Champion you'll have more points to approach 90-ish VIT And I suggest this build for MS Tank, try to have Blessing and Increase AGI active on both of you, always (Or at least on her, since it will boost her INT and DEX, essential stats for a caster class) Choose Heal, Blessing and Increase AGI's levels to your taste.

Now, gears are very important, luckily, most racial cards are cheap and you can put them in Round Bucklers (Thara Frog is Valkyrian/Immune Shield material though).  Since you both are starting, remember to do the Eden Gear quests to get some nice all around equips that will last all the way to 3rd class. (And then you focus on better gears)

Have healing items in hand since you won't be able to Heal yourself while in MS I suggest the super cheap Fresh Fish (bought from Chef Assitants in Alberta and Comodo)

With this and Mental Strenght, you are ready to tank. You might want some type of reflect gears though, so monsters don't leave you and target your GF. You engage the mobs first, always.

Hope this advice helps, or at least puts you on the right track.

And welcome back to RO!  :p_idea:

You can private message me later if you change your mind and I'll give a lot more specific advice about classes your g/f may enjoy better to duo with :no1:

Well apparently this is the last post I can make...no love for noobs :(

I'm actually considering crusader or even an FS priest now that I'm mulling it over. Leaning towards crusader so I can still solo when necessary. We have busy schedules so it'll be hard for us to play together 100% of the time. What order would you distribute your crusader stats for a tank / solo build? Just keep that ratio of "moderate str and lowish vit, dex, and int" at all times? And I'm guessing I'll be using holy / grand cross when I'm on my own?

You can do a lot of damage with holy cross when using a two-handed spear, so it's decent for soloing. STR for damage, INT to sustain your skill usage, VIT for max HP. Some AGI for aspd won't hurt, and DEX to hit things. Since that's a lot of stats to apply, you can't go all in on any of them. Probably no more than 30-40 of either DEX, VIT, or INT. High moderate STR, and sprinkle in AGI if you have the stat points for it.

For new players with less funds, really the best two person combo is Priest + anything, preferably a decent killer. It's just all around good because the priest can help heal (since you won't have much funds for healing items / gears), and will be great for getting you both into parties.

For more experienced players with more funds, the best combo is probably Sura + some decent killer. You can just use pots and don't need a dedicated healer, and you can tackle many difficult instances with just these two classes. The killer would usually be a genetic or ranger.

If you're concerned over soloing when the other person isn't here, every class can solo, even priests. You can go ME build and still be a pretty decent FS. Monks are a bit harder to play than other classes for new players. Be prepared to read a lot of guides and do a lot of research if you choose monk. Crusaders are pretty versatile but to really take advantage of them you probably need some cheap way of healing (WPH + Alarm Mask combo, Snowier accessories + Ice Cream).

It sounds to me like you're overly worried about stats. Maybe you should focus a bit more on what skills to get, what killing strategies, what cheap / affordable gears to get first, how you'll make some money, and so on. Stats are important, yes, but probably not as important as the other things I mentioned.

I tried to prsuade him to priest. In pm xP
Crusaders can get heal so it should not come to wph or whatever. After going 3rd job and having healing items and gears he can hypnotist into a more skill point appropriate mvp or woe build.

Based on the advice in this thread and after doing some research, I decided I'm not going to make a monk. I'm leaning towards priest, but crusader is still an option.

If I understand the convoluted cash shop system, I can pay a minimum of 7 dollars for 30 days VIP, then create novices in all the other class slots, and they will still be there when my VIP status runs out? So 7 bucks to permanently access the other slots?

I guess there's no rule against making other accounts too, so that could be an option?

I also heard conflicting things about stat resets. Some older posts said you could reset for free only once. Others say there's no free reset and you need magical stones.

you can spend 2 dollars to get the 7 day vip option for 200 WPE. the 30 day vip option costs 1500 wpe, but you also get 1500 kafra points (KP) that you can use to purchase things from the kafra store to go with it. you can always access and play chars in the vip slots even after vip runs out; you just cannot remake them if you delete (unless you renew vip)

there is no limit to how many accounts you can have.

you get a free stat rest from the eden mesmerist. there should be a limited number of resets available but there are conflicting reports around how many. no point wasting it on a character you decide to rebirth since you start over at 1/1 anyway.

skill resets are always free if you are level 99 and below.

Awesome, thanks for the quick responses. I suppose you're right that I shouldn't waste the stat reset. The problem is I have a 40 something critical assassin...and without funds, I can't critical yet. So I had to put my points in like 25 dex rather than luck so I can hit stuff. Basically, I need to be a dex assassin to level up, but I want to be a critical assassin.

Maybe I should switch to daggers and reset my skills until I'm ready to critical? Where are the free skill resets?

You should use a katar with double Attack until trans. You can't make a decent crit build until geared and trans+

40 CRIT is on your stats window? That's 80 with katars since it gets doubled. That's pretty much good enough already if so. I don't think 1 DEX assassin builds are really appropriate for newer players. First off you wouldn't be able to hit things as a thief unless you get some specialized (potentially expensive) gears. You also won't have enough HIT for most of your skills as an assassin too. 40-50 DEX is probably good enough if you are also getting some LUK since LUK gives HIT too. This isn't concerning acolytes anymore though so maybe you can make a new separate thread in the thief forum.

Sort of on the original topic, I do agree with making a couple other characters though, especially since you said you won't be playing with your SO at all times. Both of you should probably make some characters you can solo with. Perhaps both should make one priest-class too; it helps immensely with getting into parties.

Sorry I should've worded that differently. I meant a level 40 something assassin with no luk, virtually no crit, and about 25 dex. My bad about the off topic post.

dual dagger it up and get more dex.

do the following eden equipment quests when you are the right level. you can get some high attack daggers from them and at the end you can even enchant your dagger to give it racial dmg+ properties. since you're not actually trading in the old dagger for the new one, you can end up with the eden II AND eden III daggers.

http://irowiki.org/w...uipments_Quests

there are other eden quests you can do for extra exp and some novice potions, and bounty boards as well that you can complete for exp, zeny, and if you turn in all kill quests at once, eden merit badges. it's usually not worth it for EMBs because of exp overflow and the fact that some of the boards have a large number of kill quests.
